Report from the GWAS Regional Championships—13th
November
With so much success it is difficult to know where
to begin but this was our greatest success so far in the Regionals where Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset and
Gloucestershire compete for honours. The round was a FITA 18 and all our Compounds shot on 3 Spot faces. There were
Regional titles for, Lucy, Beckie, Callum, James, Arron, Katherine, Austin, Victoria, Liza and Tom. Special mentions
for Callum, who returned to form and top scored for the juniors compounds with 558 and for Austin aged 8 who finished with
an excellent score of 368 and won the Gents Under 14 Recurve Title. Dan continues to improve and took silver in the Men’s
Compound with an excellent score of 571 and Ian took Bronze in the Gents Longbow. The day was a long one but the team
still found time to finish off with the annual visit to the local MacDonalds. This was great preparation for the
National Championships!

Great Performances at the Gwent County Indoor Championships
Last Sunday saw a number of our members take the short trip to Chepstow to compete in a Record Status Portsmouth
Round and the results were impressive to say the least!
It is difficult to know where to start but there were
wins for Austin (Age 8) with a score of 453 and for Liza with 524 who also raised more than £200 for her charity. The Compounds had great success with all of them shooting on 3 Spots, Alex
574, Beckie 569, James H 565, Callum 564, Lucy 556 and Chloe doing her first competition with an impressive 536.
Dan finished second in the Gents Compound with 576. Victoria is returning to form winning the Junior Ladies longbow and Roger and Martin won silver and Bronze in the Gents Longbow.

Evesham Stafford.—
A mixed day for our archers.
Nine of our members entered the
Annual Stafford round (6 dozen at 30 metres) and top performance must go to James Howse who beat Rob Gruar’s long standing
County Record (U18), which at the time was also a National Record at a time when Rob was shooting for GB, for our new readers
James is just 12 years old!.
His score of 666 not only secured a medal for him but when combined
with Dan’s score of 672, finishing second in the adult compound, meant that Dan & James won the Team trophy!
There were also wins for Austin (County Record) and Liza doing her first Stafford. Lucy, doing very
well had to stop shooting with a shoulder problem, with just 7 arrows to go.
Chippenham Archers Field Competition (October
2011)
Martin and Rosemarie went to the field shoot yesterday
a 24 mixed FITA. Very compact course well laid out and had an enjoyable day. They
had Jeff Williams from Pentref with them who won the gents barebow. Their scores were, Martin 123
(winning score got 196)and Rosemarie got 155 (winning lady 225). The Chippenham organisers seemed
pleased to see us and said how they'd enjoyed shooting at Deer Park's field course a few years ago and asked when
were we putting on another.
We said we had a new course now and that there was talk of a friendly shoot
in February/March next year. They were hoping to see it advertised and said that a crowd would come from them,
as did Pentref!
We need a team of volunteers to organize
it.
Last Weekends Competitions
Well done to all those that competed, Dan, Arron & Liza won their competitions
at the Cheltenham Mixed Hereford, John took Bronze. We
are pleased that all our archers representing the County last weekend did well as did the County team, which picked up most
of the individual winners and won the Gents Recurve Team and mixed Recurve Team Trophies, and Andy Melton was a members in
both teams! Beckie in her first Senior Team appearance, beat all the archers on her target (all ranked 3 for their respective
counties) and the longbows (Janet, Ian & Roger) all shot to their handicaps, unfortunately that was not enough to trouble
most of the other counties longbow archers, who were very impressive!
Lucy broke her own National Record at the Meriden Windsor Competition with 966 but Meriden had failed to get
the necessary Record Status for it to be validated.
July Nationals
Congratulations to all those juniors who sent their scores in to
Archery GB for the Junior Nationals, there will be more in the Archery UK Magazine (probably the issue after next). Some top
results and shows how strong our junior membership is becoming, even at a National level. All those archers in the top 3 places
will receive engraved salvers which we hope to present at the annual awards.

Competition Highlights –
25th September
Well done to Liza who broke County & Regional Records in Clout event that took place in Salisbury. As
a club we need to follow Liza’s example and enter more events, they are grat fun, very different to target and there
are lots of records just waiting to be beaten! Dan and myself competed in the Gents FITA round at Chippenham, great day and we both got pb’s
although Ian’s County Record is safe for another year. I had the pleasure of shooting with David Smith a longbow archer trained by Richard
Powell, has achieved GMB status and was just amazing at the longer distances, he scored 3 ends at 90m of over 35, got a 3
gold end also at 90m!
Redruth 6th/7th
August – Congratulations to James who broke another National Record for the Double Metric 4. There
were also impressive scores for Beckie, Tom and Sammy! Tom recorded a GB Qualification score. Martin representing our increasing
number of longbows won his category. Black & Gold 7th August – Another
well run tournament with some extreme weather conditions saw a number of good wins for our archers. Dan winning the York Compound
with a PB, Roger winning the York Longbow with a very respectable 354. There were also wins for Liza who gained a Black Rose
Award, Tom, Joe and Phil. County Senior Championships 14th August – Congratulations
go to Beccii for recording an excellent Hereford Score and winning the Senior Title (to add to her Indoor Senior Title), to
Dan for making it a clean Compound sweep, recording another PB and winning the County title by just 1 point. These performances
meant that Deer Park won the Team Compound Trophy. Roger collected a silver but recorded another score over 300. Phil won
the Hereford Compound. This was the first time the County Championships have been held at Coleford and hosted by the Bowman
of the Deans and it proved to be a great venue!
Competition Highlights Congratulations to Andy for finishing second from an entry of 41
at the American Tournament at Redhill last Monday to no less than Roy Nash.
Recent Competitions May - 1st week in June We have had lots of successes over the last
few weeks and due to lots happening have not been able to report in detail on them. The records keep rolling
in at County, Regional and National level and weather permitting there should be some more next weekend at Cleve. Following
National records for Katherine, Victoria and James, this week at Minchinhampton Lucy shot 142/144 golds to add another National
Record and that helped a team of Andy, Lucy and Austin to win the team trophy. We had 33 members competing
at the Minchinhamton competition, with 17 winning their category, some of them shooting for the first time, they all enjoyed
it (despite the rain), we need to encourage more members to try a competition and I am sure they will be amazed at what they
can achieve and get out of it. Other highlights have been Andy winning the Gents Recurve at the Bath Albion and then
finishing 17th in Stage 1 of the National Series at Evesham and winning again at Minchinhampton. Lucy winning at the
Cumbrian County Champs recording 1314 in very windy conditions and also receiving an award for the highest score of the day! Our longbow archers are starting to do very well with event wins for John, Martin, Ian, Simon and Roger. Simon winning his
first York at Black and Gold and Roger just winning the 2 way Western at Cheltenham. He also recorded an MB score at Minchinhampton.
Ian, Nicky, John and Martin are shooting at Dunster this week and we wish them well.
Tom Howse spent a weekend
at the National Performance Unit gaining considerable experience and he finished top of the H2H competition organised to run
over those 2 days!
Too much to report in detail but all good competition preparation for our juniors that will
be at the National Junior Championships wnd we will be sending a very strong squad.
Cheltenham Easter Bunny Shoot - 2 National Records for
Deer Park!
Well done to Victoria Fraser (Longbow) and Katherine Frusher (Barebow) who recorded National
Records (To be Ratified)by some distance at the Easter Monday Record Status Nationals. Victoria is already National Champion
and Katherine is the first of our After-School Club (Archway - Stroud)pupil to break a National Record! Also well done
to Lucy Mason & James Lawton for recording 6 Gold Ends. Full details to follow as soon as we get the results. Also well done to our hosts, Cheltenham Archers for organising an excellent event in aid of 'Help the Heroes'.
|
|
| James recorded his first 6 Gold End at the Easter Bunny. |
|
|
| Lucy not just a 6 Gold End but all in the 10 Ring. |
Competition Reports - Outdoors 2011Outdoor season has just started, well done to Martin, Alex, Callum, John and Andy for wasting no
time in getting started. Some excellent scores particularly from Callum (County Record) and Andy. Make sure all outdoor scores
are sent in to the Records Officers please.
Easter Bunny Report will be published here. (30 members competing).
Competition Well done to Beckie for winning the Junior Ladies Compound at the World Record Status event last Sunday, with
a new FITA 18 County Record of 566. Alex won the Junior Gentleman and Callum finished second at the same event. On the same day, there were wins and more County Records for Tom, James and Lucy
at the Dorset & Wilts County Championships!
Brixham Clipper Tournament 6th February …….What a day! To say it was a great day was an understatement. Most of those shooting travelled down on Saturday, evening meal in Brixham,
assembly at 9am, left at 6:45pm following the head to heads.
The qualification round was a Portsmouth and this saw wins for Rosie (with a personal best), Andy, Beckie,
James for the single rounds and wins for John Craigie, Dan Gill, Tom Howse, James Howse and Lucy Mason for the doubles.
To qualify for the H2H archers had to generally finish in the top 8 of bow type (no junior categories). Most
of our archers qualified and earned the right to compete in the new FITA H2H format on FITA 18 3 spots. Top performance
was from Tom Howse who won all 3 of his rounds to win Gold, Tom was the only junior that qualified in the men’s recurve!
Despite qualifying as No1 Andy was beaten by the Number 8 seed in the quarter final. Dan despite qualifying 6th
in the Gents Compound again won all 3 of his rounds to win a closely contested final 8-6. Another great performance
came from John Craigie Gents Longbow who won his semi-final match despite being 1 -5 down and put up a good show in the final
to win silver. Beckie knocked out Lucy in the semi-final (Note all the other competitors were adults) and then Beckie
won her final 8-0 to secure the Ladies Compound title. Kate qualified 7th with a pb in the Ladies Recurve and lost
with her final arrow to the number 2 seed. Other excellent performances came from James Howse who again lost by the
narrowest of margins to a very experienced adult in the quarter finals. With the exception of myself all our archers coped
very well with the H2H format and I am sure our monthly H2H League has helped us in this respect. Steph was invited to be Lady Paramount following past performances at that shoot
and in a nice touch Sammy was awarded with a medal for being the youngest competing archer. Great competition, great
results and we have been invited back for the May outdoor competition! There
were 6 County Records broken by Lucy and 2 by Tom!
Other competition News Well done to Andy Melton who traveled to Nimes, France for his first International Competition,
this event had all the world top archers as it is part of the World Series, part 2 is in Las Vegas! Andy finished
a very respectable 122 out of 286 archers in that category scoring 546 on a Fita 18 target. Well done. Beckie and Tom went to the Welsh National Indoor Championships at Sophia Gardens
in Cardiff. Beckie recorded a County Record of 559 and secured 1st place visitor. Tom also recorded a personal
best and finished 3rd in his category. Well done guys.
Kingsmark - Fita 18 - Sunday 9th January
Well done to John Craigie who won the Gents Longow, just beating Martin into
second place. Beckie won the Compound recording an excellent 547, James H and Tom H also won their categories.
National Indoor Championships
9 of our
archers are shooting over the weekend of the 4th and 5th December, report to follow. We wish them well, it will be difficult
this year as most of our juniors will be the youngest in their category (2 year cycle) but they are all capable of putting
in some great performances!
County Indoor Championships
We hope to have a very big
number of Club Archers at this event to create a sea of blue. Report to follow.

Match against Cheltenham Archers - 7th March 2010
A great morning with a 16 a-side match against our friends from Cheltenham Archers resulted in a 45 to 11
points win for Deer Park!
The match had 3 stages, the first was a 2 dozen teams of 4 competition with each
club being represented by Gents, Ladies, Junior Gents and Junior Ladies. This produced 3 wins with our Junior Ladies being
just edged out.
The next stage was a series of pairs matches, again over 2 dozen arrows, the pairs being decided
on the ranked scores from the team competition. This produced a resounding 8 wins for Deer Park, although many of the matches
were close.
The final phase were the 12 individual Head-to-Head matches. This resulted in 11 wins, one draw and
4 defeats but again many of the matches were close. All rounds were using a Portsmouth face, with 3 spots being used for compounds.
Both clubs have agreed to run a number of similar events next winter. Earlier this year Cheltenham Juniors
recorded a victory over our juniors, so honours have finished even!

Edward strikes gold at Droitwich Double
Worcester!
Ed doing
his first Double Worcester recorded scores of 273 and 281 (out of 300) to win his first indoor trophy. Ed is being coached
by Carol Byde and their efforts certainly seem to be paying dividends.
County Junior Championships Thank you to all those members that supported the event which
was certainly a success. Top club performances were made by Amber, who registered a huge improvement, to James who shooting
his first Compound competition was just 2 points off a National record and also achieved his 6 gold end! Also to Tom who also
registered an excellent score shooting recurve. Of the 70 entries Deer Park had 31, with 5 juniors, Aaron (who also got a
Rose Award), Matthew, Alex, Callum and Joe winning County titles. Credit must go to Cheltenham archers Juniors who not only
turned out in numbers but recorded some good scores and won a number of titles. Alex and Callum jointly won the H2H Compound
and Joe Wilmott finished 3rd in the recurve (behind two Great Britain Archers). As well as all the club members
helping with the field layout, catering etc, can I record a personal thank you to Steph who did all of the preparation work
and organized the presentation and scores on the day.
Inter-Counties Gloucestershire finished behind Devon & Cornwall
and Dorset & Wiltshire in this years intercounties. However there was an outstanding individual performance from one of
our members, congratulations to Lawrence Gregory who recorded the second highest score on the York (946) for
the 7 man Gloucestershire recurve team. We were also represented by Nick and Ian in the Longbow team with Nick again breaking
the 300 barrier.
National Record
Congratulations to Aaron
Pearce who achieved a National record at 40m, shooting longbow at the Cleve Archers Fita star event.
Cheltenham FITA
Well done to Joe, Becky,
Alex and Callum for all completing the event in difficult blustery and wet conditions last Sunday and for all winning! Congratulations
also go to Cheltenham Archers for organizing the event.
Grand Master Bowman
Congratulations to Steph
who recorded her 3rd consecutive GMB score to earn that status for the next 12 months. She also got a new 70m County
record with a score of 339/360 as part of her 1362 in the Ladies FITA at Andover.
Cleve Archers Premier Event
Congratulation to Alex
who completed his second Premier 720 event and to Steph who won Bronze at the same event, defeating Andrea Gales ranked 33
in the world in the Bronze Medal match, she also beat Lucy O’Sullivan and Sheila Harris in earlier round, this was Steph’s
first victories over both archers. Her score was a Commonwealth Games Qualification score.
Alex & Callum Triumph at Regional Junior Championships
Saturday
27th June was a great day for Alex & Callum at the Regional Junior Championships, both not just winning but
recording outstanding scores!
Alex,
shooting a Bristol 2 (60yds) recorded 1280 with 136 Golds and 8 reds to break the existing County & Regional records held
our own Rob Gruar which was 1248 recorded in 2002.
Callum
recorded 1274 on a Bristol 3, with 133 golds and 11 reds, fantastic shooting and hopefully a good sign for this weekends National
Championships at Lilleshall.

Steph gets another County Record and second Grand Master Score
At the team event at Lilleshall

Deer Park Archers Spring Record Status Portsmouth - 8th March
My thanks go to all the Club members who helped on the day and particularly to Marnie, Nick, Lynn, Janet and
Vanessa with a special mention for Steph who ran the day as I was unable to attend. Steph also asked to mention
the excellent support that the 3 judges provided on the day, Martyn, Malcolm and Ken.
The raffle raised nearly £80 which will be donated to
Nick Green's efforts to support 'Leukemia in Children' as part of the money he is raising by running the London Marathon!
We saw some excellent performances from some of our visitors, highlights of which included Richard Powell's Double
Portsmouth Longbow score of 1046 which beat the Current British Record by 2 points, however due to a GNAS ruling it
will not be ratified as the tournament was only registered as a single Portsmouth! Kevin Weller from Wales Archery won the
Gents compouind with 571, and Cheltenham made it a recurve double with Jackie Bowser 551 and Ashe Morgan 572 winning their
classes.
The 30 Deer Park members put in some excellent performances and their were many personal bests, highlights of which were
Alex Fraser with 571 which would have tied for first in the mens competition, Becci putting in another solid score in the
under 14's recurve and an excellent score of 396 for 11 year old Molly Hobbs doing her first competition! From the adults
there was excellent performances from Marnie Shaw in just her second competition recording 491 in the Ladies recurve and Laurence
Gregory with 557 ion the Gents recurve. Ian Pearce broke Nick's County record in the gents Longbow.

Gents u18 Longbow
The best unrewarded
performance was an impressive 448 recorded by James Doolan, shooting his first competition and finishing second in the u18
Recurve. Alex, who has had his new bow for just over a week, turned in an excellent 554 in the gents u18 compound,
beaten by Great Britain archer Jake Bunce. I have to say that I was proud of all our juniors and they were all a credit to
the club and our sport, and this was commented on by both the judges and the organizers. So to all those already mentioned
and also Amber, Kieran, Tom and Matt, a very well done.
The senior recurves
saw all 7 of the 9 doing their first competitions, all performed well but the
top performances came from Laurence Gregory recording 552, finishing 5th, Edward Paddy with 527 finishing 14th
and in the ladies Jo Chamberlain was our best finisher and was placed 5th with 431. In the Gents Compound Lawrence
Devenish finished 5th, Dan Gill 7th and Karl Schneider 9th.
There was a surprise
in the Gents Longbow with Roger getting a personal best , scoring 422 and just piping Nick (412) to the title and Ian, the
competition favorite finishing in 4th.
Thanks go to the
organizers for a great event, special thanks go to Andy, Vanessa and Steph for supporting our archers throughout the day.
There was a separate
raffle to raise money for a Trust Fund, the prize was an Archery Teddy, complete with bow, quiver, arrows etc and to complete
the day Mary won it!
Deer Park Archers Autumn Fita18 - 19th Oct 2008
The competition was very well supported and the day went very well. A number of archers recorded pb's and a number of
GB qualification scores were recorded! Amongst those that competed were Amy Oliver, Adam Shore, Tracey Anderson and Greg Hill.
Ashe Morgan from Cheltenham Archers put in an excellent score and the competition gave a number of those representing Deer
Park to make their debuts. The free supply of teas, coffees, cakes, biscuits etc supplied throughout the day to all commpetitors
was well received.
