June Competition Report

The 22nd June saw the Cleve Archers Albion and Windsors shoot for Juniors. A number of our members travelled to the competition however the event was eventually abandoned due to very high winds. Callum was the most disappointed as he was the only member not to have missed the target and ‘was on for a good score!’ Alex did not wish to comment.

Rosie shot at Stratford the Sunday before and again smashed her pb and her winning score was over a thousand for the first time.

The 20th June was the date for the British Universities Championships and in terrible conditions Steph won the Ladies Compound title, she flies to Taiwan next week for the World University Championships.

Monday 23rd saw Vanessa using her new longbow for the first time at the Dunster Ladies FITA, having only ever registered scores in the 3rd Class band she turned in an amazing performance to record a Master Bowman score, finishing second and beating Mavis Reynolds (British Record Holder) into third place!

The Wednesday saw the Dunster Longbow shoot with over 200 longbow archers competing in very windy conditions on a 2 way Western, having been inspired by Vanessa’s performance on the Monday, Roger broke the County Record to finish 8th and things got better as he nailed the cross on the nominated best gold end from 60yds to win the Mary Rose Trophy.

Paul and Leslie competed at Calne in a 40x3D Big Game Round in hurricane conditions Leslie broke her pb and Paul finished second in the primitive class.

Tournament Results – Great day for DPA

Minchinhampton 8th June saw our archers in great form. Nick recorded a new County Record and Club performance of the day, for the Gents York Longbow but only held it for a matter of minutes as Ian Pierce finished just 3 points ahead. Callum recorded another PB beating his previous record by 60 points and Alex beat his PB by 1 point, both won their categories. Rosie, again shooting above her age group kept up her excellent form winning her group as did Matthew and Chris shooting longbow. Becky topped off an excellent day, easily winning the afternoon session.

UK Masters 7th and 8th June – Steph shooting at Lilleshall in the invitation event for archers who are Master or Grand Master Bowmen was very satisfied with her 8th position out of 29 in the Ladies Fita, her form is progressing much quicker than we anticipated with her new draw length and new bow.

General Report on April/May Highlights

Alex, Callum and Rosie have been keeping busy with successes at Cleve, Supermarine, Cheltenham and Salisbury. Callum has already been recording good scores at his next distance up (50m) and Alex has been shooting well above his age group (70m), whilst Rosie has been excellent, breaking her pb’s by some distance.

Becky and Martin completed their first full competition at Newport, with Becky winning not just her age group but also the best junior under 18 score award winning a number of trophies and a cheque for £15. Steph complete with new bow started her first outdoor competition of the year and recorded 658 on a 720H2H which was higher than any 720 score she achieved last year and then equalled her pb on a 12 arrow pass.

Last Sunday saw our field club organise their first NFAS competition under the direction of Paul, Mike and Angus and it went superbly, from the course design, organisation to the catering it was a success. All the visiting archers complemented the event and we just need to expand our reputation around the NFAS circuit and we will have a great future in field archery. Thanks to all those members who supported the event and with over 20 High Cross and Deer Park members present on the day it was enjoyable for everyone. A number of us shot the 2 times 20 Animal 2D Round as not competitive archers and there were excellent performances from Alastair (who has now recovered from his accident), Jack and Roger.

Brixham Archers Clipper Tournament - 3rd Feb

9 club members spent the weekend in Paighton for the record status Portsmouth. We had an excellent meal/drink on the Saturday evening at the Talk of the Town and still managed to be ready to sstart shooting at 9:15 on the Sunday morning (although it was only just in Bernies and John’s case). Top performance of the day was Jack who on the morning had to stop after just 6 arrows with big equipment issues but thanks to the support of a local Brixham coach who worked with Jack during the morning, he was ready to shoot in the afternoon. Jack had to shoot on a 3 spot face as there were no other spaces available. He recorded 497 which was a personal best and finished second. Since the event we have also received and equipment evaluation and a development plan for Jack from that coach! Rosie again shot over 500 and won a lovely trophy for winning her category.

Gloucestershire County Indoor Championships – Jan 2008

28 of our members competed in the County Indoor Championships, by far the biggest entry of any club, 6 competing for the first time, no less than 12 members achieved personal bests, 7 became County Champions and FIVE members broke  County records! Club Open Fita18 and Portsmouth - 6th Jan

Our second open event again proved a great success with 30 archers completing a 5 dozen round of their choice followed by a H2H knockout competition for the recurves and a Round Robin League for the top 6 Compound archers. Their were pb's for Roger B, Dan, Mark, Tom and Lynn. Ashe Morgan(Cheltenham Archers) won the Recurve final, with our own Andy Cramb taking second place and Andrea beating Guy Chambers (Cheltenham) to the Bronze position.
The Compound Fita18 3 spot saw Steph and Mike (    ) tie on 569 in the qualification round and in the Round Robin League Greg Hill (St Kingsmark) took first position, Mike second and Steph third. There were outstanding performances by our own Alex and Callum Fraser in both the qualification and Round Robin and they gained invaluable experience for the future!

Andover combined FITA
Alex (Callum's brother) recorded 2 county and 2 regional records in winning the Under 18 Combined Fita, registering records at the 25m distance and the overall total. Steph won the ladies again breaking the 25m score and the total. This event which accommodated 20 targets used to be an annual competition in the 1990's and this was the start of a new series, the lighting was difficult but the rest of the venue was good and we should look to support this event in the future. As always the medals and trophies are excellent at Andover.

Deer Park Open Portsmouth at Balcarras

30 archers competed in our first Open competition completing a Portsmouth qualification round and then a Head to Head elimination. Andy (538) topped the Qualification recurve division with Paul Phillips from Droitwich  ranked second then there were some excellent performance by 4 of our archers, Ian Blackburn recorded a pb and scored 501 followed by 2 of our ‘new’ members doing a Portsmouth round for the first time John Spear(496) and Martin Hutchings (484) followed by an excellent score of 482 by Janet Taylor! Rosie finished 7th and another visitor Tom Bainbridge from Cheltenham Archers finished 8th. 23 archers competed in the Elimination round which saw Andy win the Gold from Paul Phillips in a close encounter, the Bronze was won by Janet tying with John Spear but winning the first shoot off with a 9 to John’s 8.

In the Longbow division Nick Green top scored and Chris Green (282) and Matthew Green both recorded County records which are valid as this was a formal target day!

The Compound saw Steph again record 581 just 1 point off the British record and Jack Woods record his first score over 500 and Karl complete his first competition. The Elimination round saw Steph taking the Gold with Roger the Silver and Georgia the Bronze.

This was a really successful event and gave everyone valuable experience.

Competition Reports

Steph did her first indoor competition at Brixham on the 28th October winning the FITA 18 with solid scores of 561 and 563. She followed this up with a 576 on a Portsmouth at St Kingsmark finishing second. Roger recorded a respectable 563 in his first indoor competition shooting compound and finishing 9th out of 19.

The Evesham FITA 18 saw Alex score an excellent personal best of 537 and Callum record 468 (beat his own personal best by 100), both won their groups! Sharon recorded 498 which is solid for her first indoor shoot of the season. Steph improved on her Brixham score with 567 which was 3 points short of a British qualification score for the European Champs in Turin (she has already qualified).

Cleve Premier Event - 21st/22nd July
Cleve Archers did an outstanding job to prepare the ground only a day after the heavey rain. Well done to Denise and all her staff! Steph was our only representitive on day 1 taking part in the 720 Head to Head. She finished 3rd in the qualification round and following the elimination rounds won the Bronze Medal playoff to again finish 3rd. Andrea Gales was outstanding on the day and won the Gold Medal from Rebecca Grindley in silver.
Day 2 saw the FITA and Metric rounds and Alex was competing in the M3 category and Callum in the M4. Both again did extremely well and Alex posted a pb and club record of 1330, this despite losing a 10 scoring arrow for shooting after the traffic light had turned to red. Callum scored 1266 just short of his pb set at the British Junior Championships.
Steph withdrew after 3 dozen with a couple of technical issues which we sorted out on the Sunday evening.
Again well done to Cleve for working so hard to keep the event on.

30th June and 1st July
The Regional Junior Championships saw 3 of our archers competing, Alex shooting for the County team shot an outstanding 1266 on a Bristol 3 and winning the Regional title. The Gloucestershire team finished second overall but were a member short. Callum recorded a score of 1118 to finish second. Rosie fresh back from holiday recorded 824 but was unplaced.
The Weekend Premier event at Lilleshall was cancelled so Steph managed to get a late entry at Supermarine where Alex and Callum had already entered. All 3 managed to survive the day in incredibly windy and wet conditions. Alex and Calllum both recorded respectable scores on Metric Rounds to win their groups. Steph struggled throughout the day and did not finish in the first three. Some of our archers were also competing at Cheltenham and we will update this site as soon as we have some results.

Cleve Windsors
Just 3 of our members competed in this event which took place last Saturday. As a Club we should encourage all our juniors to enter next year, it is an excellent event for both experienced and inexperienced junior archers which also caters for parents. Alex recorded the highest score of the day despite messing up with his sight marks at the shortest distance! Callum also won as did Kieran who was delighted with his first trophy.

British Universities Championships
Stephanie equalled her personal best on a Ladies Fita scoring 1344 but still finished second to the excellent Danielle Brown who shoots for Great Britain.

UK Masters Tournament
Each year the GNAS hold a 2 day competition at Lilleshall for all those that have qualified as Master Bowman or Grand Master Bowman during the previous year. There were 9 attendees from Gloucestershire in the 150 competitors, Mavis Reynolds from Cheltenham Archers was one of only 2 Longbow Archers in the UK to qualify and she broke the British 720 record in the process of winning the event. Adam Shaw from Cleve Archers recorded a personal best in the Gents Compound FITA to finish second on the day and 7th overall. Steph finished 6th out of 30 in the qualification round, 5th in the Head to Head and recorded another GMB score in the Sunday FITA, finishing 7th and in the overall rankings finished a creditable 5th. Carrol Brimfield Cleve Archers finished 8th overall in the Ladies Recurve. Jake Bunce from Cleve Archers Juniors did exceptionally well and finished 45th overall.  The GNAS have organised an excellent weekend, well done to them!

Great Weekend for Deer Park Archers! 2/3rd June
Minchinhampton held an excellent shoot on the Sunday and Deer Park had no less than 14 archers competing. Nine of them won their category and the remainder finishing in the first 3, with 7 getting personal bests. Kieran in his first competition scored an excellent 442 on the short Bristol 5 and Victoria also won to complete the double. Alex recorded another personal best of 1238 to win the B3 compound and Callum also recorded a pb of 1146 to win the B4 Compound. Rosie returned to her best winning the B3 Recurve also with a pb of 843. Chris and Mathew won their respective longbow sections but Nick was narrowly beaten into second place on the gents Longbow. Steve won the Gents Recurve, whilst Andrea and Amy finished second and third in the Ladies Hereford. Heather finished 3rd in the Junior Ladies recurve and Sharon continued her good form by scoring 570 on the National.
Steph and Roger were competing at Exmouth, Roger completed his first Ladies Fita with a score of 1147 and Steph won the Double Ladies Fita again recording a GMB score on the Sunday.

Cheltenham Archers 2 way Western Longbow Shoot
Deer Park were represented by 6 members and although we have had representives shooting for many years this was the first time that we had archers finishing in a top 3 place. Nick was placed second in the Gents and Vanessa second in the Ladies with a score up 127 points above her previous personal best! Well done to Chris G. who was the only junior shooting and he did very well. He was also unlucky not to win the best white prize as his arrow landed on the outside line and looked favourite to win the prize until Vanessa shooting her last arrow displaced Chris's arrow.

Black & Gold - 20th May
We had lots of archers shooting at the Black and Gold Spring Shoot and all of them shot well. Andrea won the Ladies Recurve and Amy finished 3rd in the same category. Nick won the York Gents Longbow and Mike the Hereford Gents Longbow. Sharon won the Ladies Compound National with a very impressive 576, easily a PB and Karl shooting in his first competition scored over 400 in the Gents National Recurve. Alex again scored over 1200 to win the B3 Compound and Callum recorded another PB to win the B4 Compound. Heather also got another PB to finish second in the B4 Recurve. Well done to everyone and thank you to Black and Gold for organising an excellent day.

Sunday 13th May
Callum and Andrea represented the County in a friendly match against Worcestershire which was held at Redditch, unfortunately it was abandoned at lunch due to extreme weather conditions, even so Callum was on for a PB!
Steph was shooting at Oxford in the Premier Double 720, again the weather conditions were very difficult with over half the competitors failing to complete the Day. Steph struggled through and managed to finish 3rd but it was not a day to remember.

Cleve Archers Spring Tournament - 29th April
Firstly can we say well done to Cleve for organising an excellent competition.
13 of our members competed. Outstanding performance of the day was Alex winning the Junior B3 Gents Compound with an excellent score of 1222. Heather won the Junior Ladies B4 Recurve, with a personal best and Rosie the B3 Recurve. Callum won the B4 Compound and Paul using his new back tension release aid made an incredible improvement on his personal best and looks good for future competitions. Andrea finished second in the Ladies Recurve as did Nick in the Longbow and Sharon won the Ladies Compound National. As for the rest of us, well we enjoyed our shooting, did our best and had an excellent day!

Chippenham FITA - 15th April
Only Steph attended the shoot on the Sunday and recorded her second GMB score finishing second on the day to Kay Smith the reigning British Champion who scored a personal best of 1350 some 17 points ahead of Steph.

Cheltenham Easter Bunny Medal Winners

Cheltenham Easter Bunny - National Rounds
17 of our members took part in the annual tournament hosted by Cheltenham Archers at their new ground, the weather was good however a blustery breeze meant conditions were not quite perfect. Andrea won the Ladies Recurve, Steph the Ladies Compound (equalling the National Record) with a score of 640. Alex won the boys under 15 round with an excellent score of 620 and Callum won his category with another good score of 596. Rosie won the Junior Ladies recurve. Other members picking up medals were Paul Blackburn and Heather Shepherd. Sam Johnson now shooting for Oxford University won a Bronze in the Gents Recurve shooting an excellent score of 580. It was not one of our better days for the longbows and Paul's longbow lost it's cast making it almost impossible to reach the target. Roger completed his first competition with a Compoud bow shooting a creditable 592. Well done to Cheltenham Archers for organising the event and congratulations on their new ground, it will prove to be a great venue.

Castle Bowman Record Status FITA
Steph got the outdoor season off to a good start when winning the Ladies FITA on a superb sunny day in Cardiff. Finishing with a GMB (Grand Master Bowman) score of 1345 with one County record and 4 personal bests at 60m, 50m, 30m and the overall total was an excellent start to the season.

West Midland FITA 18 3 Spot Regional Championships at Evesham.
Well done to Alex and Callum for competing in the 3 Spot FITA 18 competition on Sunday 4th March, Alex recorded a club best Junior Gents Compound score for 2007. Sharon recorded a personal best score (it was her first FITA 18) and won the clasification award and Andy beat his earlier score at the British Championships. Steph did the double round and scoring 570 in the first session (another GB qualification score) and that was good enough to win the Ladies Visitors Compound, and she recorded 567 in the second session. Well done to Janice French (CentreShot) who despite having an equipment failure which cost her points was still able to record 556 which was enough to win the Regional and County Titles.

So well done to team 5(Eliza, Alex, Phil and Jack), the only team with all juniors!
As a matter of interest we worked out the average end score for each team and it does show how close the teams were! In order Team 5 (79), Team 1 (76), Team 4 (75), Team 6 (74), Team 3 (73) and Team 2 (72).

Deer Park Archers weekend visit to the Brixham Clipper Tournament 4th Feb 2007

11 members enjoyed a 2 day break in Torbay in the first weekend of February, the Saturday afternoon saw a bracing walk along Paignton sea front followed by an evening meal at the Talk of the Town. Callum won the award for biggest achievement finishing a piece of  chocolate cake almost as big as him, in just under 1 hour however he did not look too well on the Sunday morning, which saw a 9:00 start to accommodate a double Portsmouth 3 spot, followed by a FITA 18 3 spot Head to Head Elimination competition, however he record a very solid score of 493. Alex got off to a slow start as he adapted to his first 3 spot competition but finished strongly with a total of 434. Sharon shooting only her second indoor competition, her first on a 3 spot met her target of scoring over 500 and her reward was a semi-final match on a FITA 18 3 spot, the best of 5 ends shot alternatively with her opponent who proved to be just too strong losing 3-0. Stephanie again had a good day scoring 578, beating all the men in the morning session and claiming a new County record, she claimed the double Portsmouth County record in the afternoon shooting 569 and claimed a third record in the elimination final winning 4-0 and scoring 115 on a 12 arrow pass! Vanessa also got a personal best on the Portsmouth Longbow and claimed the double Portsmouth County record, Roger improved on his poor showing at the recent County Championships but still finished last in his category. Lynn, Jos and Rosie finished off the day winning 3 raffle prizes, so drinks on them. This is an excellent tournament which members have been attending for many years and any event organised by Brixham Archers is to be recommended.

2007 Gloucestershire County Indoor Championships  - 21st January
25 of our archers entered this years County Championships which turned out to be a great day with no less than 8 of our Archers becoming County Champions from the 15 titles on offer!

countychampsnicer.jpg

Steph scored 574 to smash the County record and win the ladies compound. Georgia Cass won the under 18 Junior Girls Compound whilst Amy J won the Junior Girls Recurve under 18. Callum Fraser finished 3rd with 491.
A number of our non medal winning members also put in excellent performances, Chance Gough shooting his first competition for some time (and also very little practice) scored 411 in the Gents under 18 Recurve just pipping the ever improving Ian Blackburn by 2 points, both are aged just 14! There was just 1 point between Paul Yeomans (shooting his first competition and looking very smart) and Mike Shepherd. Steve Johnson finished on an identical score to his wife Andrea (spooky!) Di Blackburn produced a solid score and is starting to get back to her best, the same could be said about Paul who also shot consistently. Michael Sleight was also shooting in his first competition finishing 8th out of 12 an excellent start.
Well done to all those that shot and represented Deer Park Archers so well.
Cleve archers did very well with Adam Shaw winning the gents compound with a superb score of 590 and fellow team member Gary Bunce finishing second with 579. Keeping it in the family Jake won the gents under 18 compound with 577. Chris Docker from Cleve won the Boys under 18 recurve with an excellent 561 and his brother Andrew pipped outr own Alex Fraser to gold medal position with an excellent score of 541.  Cheltenhams Mike Beard took the Gents Recurve with 573 and Tockington's Eloise Fowler beat Andrea into second place with a score of 563.
