Great Performances in the Junior Inter-Counties County Team

10 of the 15 members of the team came from Deer Park and they all made a great contribution to the teams success in winning the 'Margaret Lewis' Trophy and the Recurve and Compound Team Trophies! 4 got personal bests, probably the biggest improvement came from Robie Baker, who added almost 100 points to his PB. Steve Mason, deputising for Steph, who is on her honeymoon, galvanised the team with a pre match speech and they all responded with some great shooting.
Graham Williams, well known local coach who has done so much for the National Junior Squad, as well as supporting local archers and coaches, had a trophy named after him. Fittingly our recurve team, containing Ashe Morgam and Kieran Slater won the Trophy named after him and Graham got to present it!

Well done to all the juniors and coaches who have put so much time and effort into preparing for the competition.

Regional Junior Inter-Counties Championships

Another great day at a championship event, with 10 of our 12 entries winning titles and the remaining 2 winning silver! So well done to our Regional Champions, Alex Fraser, Aaron Pearce, Tom Howse, Callum Fraser, Beckie Hutchings, James Howse, Austin Whitmarsh, Lucy Mason, Victoria Fraser and Sammy Howse.

As another bonus we also won the overall team trophy with a score of 3,067 with another Gloucestershire club in second with Cleve Archers on 2,352. Quite a margin! Well done to GWAS for organising the event.

Great Performance at the National Junior Championships!

We are pleased to announce that our team of junior archers were the highest performing club at this years National Junior Archery Championships held at Lilleshall the National Sports Center.

The team of 10 juniors finished with an array of titles, medals and trophies but most importantly 2 of our juniors secured a place in the archery history records.

On the Saturday James Howse became the first British junior of any age or category to break the 1400 points barrier with a fantastic score of 1406 to win the Junior Gentleman’s  Compound competition, in doing this he also secured 2 National Records. The following day he secured his 4th National title, again with another National record on a Bristol 4 round.

Not to be outdone Lucy Mason became the first British Junior to record a perfect Bristol round at any age and distance, shooting 144 golds from 144 arrows in the Compound under 12 round and secured her first National Title.

The 3rd National Championship Title was secured by Victoria Fraser shooting Junior Ladies under 12 title and also shooting 2 National records on the Saturday.

3 members won silver medals with Katherine Frusher, Beckie Hutchings and Callum Fraser all recording great scores in perfect conditions. James Lawton won bronze in his first competition at this level.

There were also personal best scores for Alex Fraser who was in a very difficult group and for Will Kurtz. Tom Howse finished 6th in a strong field of 40 archers.

Congratulations also go to
Ashe Morgan from Cheltenham Archers won silver and Kieran Slater from Minchinhampton bronze, in a very difficult category, they were the only other archers from the county to win medals.

Gloucestershire also won the best compound team trophy (James, Lucy and Beckie) with all the archers representing Deer Park and the GWAS Region finished second with this team.

National, Regional and County Records all the way!

The 2010/11 indoor season saw an absolute flood of junior members beating records, we will try to publish a summary of them in the next few weeks. The outdoor season has just started and the achievements have continued, including 2 National Records!

We have decided to maitain a 'seasons best' club records list which will be updated monthly. First issue planned for end of May and will go in the Club Newsletter and Notice board. The scores used will be only those submitted to the records Officer.

County Junior Squad Development Programmes
ATTENTION ALL JUNIORS!
We are pleased to announce that we now have the funding to support 2 programmes for junior archers in the County. Applications are encouraged and welcomed from any Gloucestershire junior archers that meet the following criteria: Under 18 on the 12th September 2011Have completed a beginner’s course and are Archery GB members. Are members of Gloucestershire Archery Society. Are fully committed to improving their archery.Have parental support.Shoot Recurve or Compound. Not already a member of the Junior National Squad.
There are 2 programmes that will be running over the next 12 months.
Programme 1  is an 8 Day High Performance Coaching ProgrammeIt will be run on 8 Sundays across the 12 months at Balcarras School Sports Centre in Cheltenham with Mrs Kath Fitzpatrick – Senior Coach from Yorkshire (See Page 20 Winter 2010 Archery UK for some information, lots more on the internet etc.). Kath will be supported by Steph Crang and Dan Gill as part of their County Coaching qualification & CPD.The content will be flexible depending on the level of the archers involved and their specific and individual needs. However some core elements will need to be covered, the degree to which each goes into will be dependant on need, age and maturity of participants and their capacity to understand theoretical elements. Delivery will be largely practical with some theory/taught elements – however fun is a strong requirement. The programme will break into four areas, however due to timing not necessarily in this order, pre season, early season training, performance monitoring and review and post season training. Telephone and email support will be provided throughout the programme.

NOTE- THIS PROGRAMME WILL ALSO BE SUITABLE FOR NOVICE ARCHERS THAT MEET THE CRITERIA AND DEMONSTRATE A MOTIVATION AND WILL TO LEARN.(It does not mean that if you are not in the County Junior Squad that you are not eligible –so if you have the passion to improve and will provide the commitment then why not apply?)

A final selection event will take place on Sunday 27th March at Balcarras School Sports Centre. Novice archers should note that this will be a fun event and selection will be made on the basis of potential, enthusiasm, commitment etc and not just on past or present performance.  For this reason existing County Junior Squad members should not assume they will be selected for this programme.

Programme 2 is a 3 day scaled down version of the 8 day programme Numbers permitting, all those that meet the criteria for programme 1 but are not included in the final selection will be eligible for this course. You can get application forms from Roger, Steph or Dan or download it from the Gloucestershire Archery Society Website.

SUNDAY 12TH BALCARRAS -  CLUB JUNIOR TEAM BUILDING MORNING

WE HOPE TO SEE ALL JUNIORS AT THIS EVENT!!!!!!!!!

This is an ideal opportunity for new junior members to get to know other juniors in a fun morning.

Introduction
As a Club over 60% of our members are juniors aged from just 7 through to 18 at which point we generall lose them to the universities. To try to retain contact we make them honary members so that they can shoot with us during their spells back at home.
We would like to develop some more pages for our junior members. What you see is just the start, we need ideas so please let us know what you think.

How does junior membership work?

The club pays a blanket fee to Archery GB to cover all juniors that join the club. With our after-schools activities we operate a 2 tier system;

Members of after-school clubs that have successfully completed the beginners course (part of the 8 week Sport Unlimited Program) complete an Archery GB Membership form but do not pay any additional membership fee to Deer Park Archers. They are eligible to compete in competitions etc but do not attend general club practice sessions.

If they wish to upgrade their membership of the club to be able to attend general practice sessions then they will need to pay the 10 pounds club membership fee.

Juniors that join direct to the club, from open beginners courses etc, pay the 10 pounds membership fee and can attend any club sessions. They may also attend the after-school club sessions if there is one operating in their school.

Progress Awards

Open to all juniors, linked to key stage curriculum.  Dan is organizing it, ask him for details and have a go. 10 of our juniors qualified for various levels a fortnight ago, well done to them. These awards will be presented at the club Beetle Drive and Awards Evening.

Achievements

Our major achievement is to recruit and retain junior archers of ALL abilities and ages and to have developed a framework of Schools and community groups to sustain that supply. Retention is only achieved by ensuring fun, support, creating a famiy environment, providing recognition and affordable membership, partnerships keeping what we do relevant, seeking and taking opportunities and embracing change. We work hard in all these areas but recognise we can and need to do more!

Another achievement is to have worked with many archers that have become British Junior Champions for their age group and broken many British Records, many of which still stand.

The following is a mixture of things you need to know about the club and some links to some fun archery games.

Test your Longbow skills and see what level you can get to.

Can you hit the moving target?

Do you know the names of the Club's Junior Representitives?
We currently have 3 junior representitives Rosie Benfield, Beckie Hutchings and Alex Fraser. We are looking for a fourth if you would like to volunteer. Their role is to represent our junior members at committee meetings and to ensure that all views held by juniors are listened to by the Cliub's Senior members. So if you have things to say talk to any committee member!

Can you beat the teacher?

Our Club has 2 Child Protection Officers
Martin Hutchings (Beckie's Dad) is our CPO
Mary Crang is the Assistant CPO
If you are unsure about the roles of the Child Protection Officers then why not ask them, any of the coaches (who have also been trained) or your parents/guardians.
