Severn Valley Field Shoot

4 of us did an all day 36 target (3D Big Game) shoot last Sunday and had a great time in the snow and sunshine. The event was NFAS so we were all High Cross members, the event gathered at 9:30 and eventually completed at around 5:00 but it was such fun that it seemed like only a couple of hours! During the day we encountered a range of deer, lions, puma, bears, crocodiles, fish, birds, snakes etc etc.

There were over 170 entries so competition was good, Paul won the Primitive Class with an amazing score of over 400, and there was a good performance from Vanessa who was second in the Ladies Longbow. Mark was unplaced and broke most of his self nocked arrows shooting in the primitive class, so we know what he will be doing over the next few evenings. He completed the morning session wearing a short sleeved tee-shirt! I had considerably more layers on but it did not help as I was also unplaced and I know that the winner in the gents longbow scored just over double my score so some more practice is required.

2007 GWAS Championships and Open Field Shoot

Report on our FITA 24 Marked Course – Non Record Status Event -Oct 7th

For most of our members this was their first field course competition and for Deer Park it was the first time we had organised a Field Archery Competition but the way members worked to get the day as good as we could get it and the level of performance of our archers on the day was just excellent! Thanks must go to the visiting archers for their positive support especially those from Pentref, Minchinhampton, Cleve and Ballands and in particular to Andrew Rees, Gloria, Phil Comer and John Harvey. Feedback from the event was excellent, in general a good course with lots of potential and the experience we gained will be essential in ensuring we host many more competitions in the future!

18 Regional Titles were awarded 9 of them Senior, Ballands took the Ladies and Gents Barebow with excellent performances from Andrew(256) and Jane(280) Rees. Cleve took 3 titles, Lauren Hicks winning the Ladies Recurve with a personal best of 251, Luke Jones put in an excellent performance to win the Gents Recurve (259), with his dad in 3rd place on 241! This category had the largest number of competitors and our own John Spear just beat fellow Deer Park archer Bernie Woods to 8th place. Gary Bunce secured the Gents Compound title with 346. Deer Park won 4 Senior Titles, Steph Crang winning the Ladies Compound with 334, Paul Yeomans and Vanessa Crang winning the Longbow titles and Keith Baker winning the Traditional category.

The 9 junior titles saw Deer Park winning 6 of them, John and Eliza Cass, Callum(330) and Alex Fraser(314), Lukas Baker and Harry Evans all competing in their first field archery competitions. Another excellent performance came from our own Beckie Hutchings who was narrowly beaten by Eliza into the Silver position, Beckie has only recently started shooting and this was her first competition of any sort! Louise and Elizabeth Rees for Ballands meant it was FOUR titles for the Rees family! Jake Bunce (321) secured the Junior Gents Compound title for Cleve.

There were 30 visitors competing and there were many excellent performances, the Gents Barebow saw a very tight finish with 3 archers all finishing on the same score of 280. Jeff Williams took the title with 25 golds, Phil Bowen was second with 23 golds and Rob Edwards was the unlucky archer, finishing 3rd with 22 golds. All were from Pentref. The Ladies Compound saw Tracey Anderson (347) just pip Nichola Simpson by just 2 points!

Well done to everyone on the day.

Unfortunately photo's just do not capture the challenge of the terrain but we have included a few. The best way to appreciate it is to come along and have a go.

A view across a 'flatter' part of the course!

One fear has been the loss of arrows, well as all those that have done the course will tell you, it does not happen very often. When arrows have been lost they have generally be found by the next group around or Paul and Roger have subsequently found them with a metal detector!

We have discovered that the challenges of the course really do change with the time of the year. During the summer plenty of growth, long grass and flies, the winter (plus sheep) has seen much shorter grass, few flies but plenty of streams and ponds to shoot across!

All those that have used the course will tell you that as the course is on the side of a hill, almost in a bowl, it has its own micro climate little or no wind and as a result seems to be much warmer on the course rather than at the start.
