During June and July we are running 5 separate programmes, 2 at local schools, 1 during a Tuesday morning and 2 on evenings.

We will be starting our last Summer Beginners Course on Wednesday 16th July.

The next course will not start until the end of September when we move indoors at Birdlip, we already have some names but there are still places available.

Archery Beginners Courses - May and June

We started 2 of them in May, one on Tuesday evenings and the second on Wednesday evenings, unusually the Wednesday course is all adult, it is just the way things worked out!. The cost is just £18 for the 6 weeks and less per head if there is more than 1 family member.

We continue to welcome new beginners and are happy to programme them in on days/dates to suit individuals.

Use the Contact the Club page to register your interest

We are also running a 6 week beginners course for Coberly Primary School starting 9th June and also running sessions during June for Balcarras School.

Extract from our Beginners Programme booklet

This booklet is designed to identify, in brief, the approach and activities you will undertake during the six-session Archery Beginners Course. It has been designed to satisfy the requirements of the Grand National Archery Society (GNAS) which will be required to join (for insurance purposes etc) if you wish to continue in the sport. All equipment is provided and the programme will be supported by practice and demonstration and qualified Coaches will be on hand at all times during the course.

We are currently applying for accreditation for Clubmark which is a National  scheme recognizing the upholding of standards in the following areas:

Coaching Programmes

Duty of care and Child Protection

Sports equity and ethics

Club management

We have codes of conduct for coaches, members, volunteers & parents/carers.

Fees

We do not charge an Archery Beginners Course fee, preferring to treat all beginners as if they were already Club members, so a sub of just £3 for each session attended is charged. We  want to encourage family participation  so the fee for two family members is reduced to £5. You will not find a lower cost Archery Beginners Course in Gloucestershire!

As you will see from our website we try to offer a range of activities and social events. We also have a Field Archery Club called High Cross which is affiliated to the NFAS.

Archery Beginners Course

‘The Deer Park Approach’

We recognise that each  individual is different.  We  avoid  large programmes preferring to work with groups of no more than 4 .

We ensure each archer can develop at their own pace by providing them with individual support  to give them the best start possible.

The small group approach has proved to be the best way of ensuring new members are more easily integrated into the rest of the club.

We strive  to create an environment of continuous learning and support throughout the club such that the availability of coaching continues unchanged after completion of the first 6 weeks.

When juniors are involved we strongly encourage at least one parent/Guardian to complete the first 6 weeks (and hopefully then continue) as this helps the parents to better appreciate the challenges of archery and hence provide the necessary support and encouragement..

We strive for integration not separation, so do not run separate sessions for juniors believing that standards of behaviour and learning are better achieved by this approach.

We promote participation in competition so again strongly support and encourage members to compete in formally organised competitions.

We promote archery as a family sport.

We start Archery Beginners Course programmes throughout the year.

We encourage all our members to demonstrate the following etiquette

A Good Archer;

Does not talk in a loud voice when others are shooting.

Does not talk to another competitor who obviously prefers to  be silent.

Does not make any exclamation on the shooting line which might disconcert a fellow archer in the act of shooting.

Does not go behind the target to retrieve arrows before his score has been recorded.

Does not walk up and down the line comparing scores.

Does not touch anyone else’s equipment without permission.

When calling scores does so in groups of three, eg. 7-7-5 pause 5-5-3.

If they break another’s arrow through their own carelessness pays for it.

Thanks the Target Captain at the end of each round for work on their behalf.
