More recognition for the Club!
We
are pleased to announce that Steph Gill has won the Sports Coach UK Young Coach of the Year Award. She received
the prestigious Heather Crouch Award from the Princess Royal at the Carlton Tower, London, last night - only days after winning
the Coach of the Year title in the Gloucestershire Media Awards. Steph was quick to highlight that this award was very
much as result of team work between the archers, the junior's parents, the coaching team, the club, the County and
Archery GB with the support of Active Gloucestershire and many local schools. She also emphasised that whilst the club
has many high performing archers that attract the headlines, that the progress of many of those that are just starting the
sport and those members who are happy to be recreational archers is equally rewarding and impressive!

Monday 28th November – Club Committee Meeting
A big thank you to all those members who
give up their time to help the club run. In times when we seem to be getting all sorts of awards and recognition, it is easy
to forget the work that our elected committee members carry out to ensure things run smoothly. On Monday evening there
was a committee meeting at the Golden Heart with a wide ranging agenda and some of this will be reported in the next Club
Newsletter.

Sunday 27th November – GAS AGM
The GAS Coaching AGM held in the morning, was well attended with 21 Coaches present
(7 Deer Park) and there was time to have discussions on areas such as coaching communication, future workshops and training
needs. Steph was re-elected as County Coaching Officer and Andy Cramb was re-elected as Chairman of the Coaching Review Panel.
Following the formal part of the meeting there were short presentations on the current status of the Archery GB
Adapted Equipment Initiative and the current status of the Archery GB Instructors Project, Gloucestershire is hosting pilot
programmes for both of these excellent initiatives.
The County AGM in the afternoon was equally well
attended; all the existing Officers were re-elected. Our thanks must go to Rob Richardson, the County President, who
stepped down after many years of great service and our congratulations go to Denise Bunce who has been elected to the post.
Rob has agreed to take up one of the County Vice-President posts.
His last duty in post was to confer Honorary
Life Membership on Roger Crang in recognition of his many years of service to the County.

Our Equipment Officer and Trainee Coach

Sports
Coach UK Heather Crouch Young Coach of the Year Finalist!
Steph Gill has just been informed that she is a finalist
in the National Sports Coach UK awards in the Young Coach of the Year Category (under 25)! http://www.sportscoachuk.org/node/61074 She
was nominated by Mike Addis Chairman of Gloucestershire Archery Society and endorsed by Archery GB for the coaching work she
does at all levels in the club and county. Not content with being Head Coach for Deer Park Archers, Steph
and her husband Dan work in schools every day of the week, promoting grass roots activity and develop and lead all the County
level initiatives for the development of juniors who are now recognized as some of the best in the UK.
Despite currently being the youngest coach in the county, she is also the County Coaching Officer and a member of the
Archery GB Youth Forum. Steph and Dan also work closely with Active Gloucestershire supporting general community activities
and Active Inclusion events. Steph is also a finalist at the Gloucestershire Echo Sports Media Awards later this month. The awards
ceremony will be held at The Carlton Tower in London on the 29th November. All 3 of the candidates in each
category will be introduced to HRH The Princess Royal before the dinner who will also be making the presentations later in
the evening. The finalists have also been invited to attend a buffet lunch at the Palace of Westminster the following day where
they will be introduced to Peers, MPs and other VIPs as part of the celebration of the essential role will play leading up
to the Olympics.
This is another great honour for the Club and County and reflects the hard work that all our members invest
in our great sport.
Deer Park Firework Night - Thursday 3rd November
The weather, unlike previous years was so kind to us, heavy rain in the afternoon but mostly clear skies in the
evening and very mild and the event was well attended! The main firework display was well received however the big finale
did not happen as our £190 firework did not work, which was a great dissappointment to everyone. The good news is that
we contacted the supplier the following morning and they have kindly agreed to fully reimburse us! The bonfire was excellent
and the team looking after the refreshments were kept busy all night, in truth a bit too busy. A big thank you to everyone
that helped. The good news is that we more than covered our costs.
Social events to be well attended
The
club Tenpin bowling evening is now approaching 50 entries and the Firework and BBQ evening planned for Thursday will
see an attendance of over 200! Great support at practice and social events. Fingers crossed for some decent weather!
Birdlip Coaching Sessions Proving to be a hit
Tuesdays
are one of the days when the club meets in 3 venues, the highly successful after-school club at Kingshill with 48
puplis registered, is followed by sessions at Birdlip and Shurdington. Andy and Janet are running 1-2-1 Coaching Improvers
Sessions at Birdlip and the spaces are all taken. These follow successful events last year. A club session also takes place
at a bigger venue in Shurdington and again is well attended. Both sessions are supported by coaches and likewise use of video
analysis is used at both venues. This level of activity and support is certainly producing some excellent results!
Record Club Entry in the British Junior Inddor Championships!
We have 17 representatives in this Decembers National Junior Indoor Championships in Stafford, this is almost
double the size of last years team which performed so well when finishing as the highest performing club.
Head
Coach Steph Gill feels it is a natural progression based on the Club's innovative recruitment processes and the dedication
of the club's coaches and the committment of the archers and especially the parents that support them. The club now operates
7 days a week in a range of venues and all the sessions are supported by coaches. ''The team is a good mix of well
established archers and some who are competing at this level for the first time and this experience will be essential for
their long term development. The exciting fact is that we have a even larger group of talented juniors already showing
great potential and pushing to compete at this level.''

| Day 1 of the 4 Day Course - Classroom |
Coaching Programmes are Essential to our Future
The first of a number of Level 1 Coaching Courses started on the 30th October at Balcarras School and as well as
archers from Deer Park there are also representatives from Cheltenham, Tyndale and GL1. Three of those from Deer Park Archers
are School teachers who will help to make after-school clubs more sustainable and the 2 Community Coaches from GL1 will help
to make the sport more accessible to the general public that use the GL1 Recreation Centre. The club will also be hosting
another L1 Coaching Course in March 2012 for 15 - 18 year olds, this course is funded by Sport England and Archery GB and
further courses are being planned. Course Organiser Roger Crang commented that ' with the growth of the sport
in the County and the anticipated Olympic Effect that creating a well trained coaching resource is essential to properly supporting
all levels of participants.''

Excellent Longbow Shoot at Cheltenham Archers 30th October
Cheltenham Archers hosted an excellent longbow shoot, which saw a good entry in somewhat cool and blustery
conditions, however the level of hospitality and the brilliant company more than compensated. This is an excellent event that
deserves even more support next year, for most it is the last outdoor shoot of the year and an excellent way to finish. Mixed
levels of success for our archers Arron Pearce won the Junior Section and Janet Hudson the Ladies Competition. The gents was
dominated by a number of visitors to the county so Ian and Roger had to settle for a nice warm cup of tea! For longbow archers
this is certainly an event to put in your diary for next year. Well done Cheltenham Archers.
Gloucestershire Echo Media Sports Awards
The Club's success in the Archery GB ontarget
awards came on the same weekend as the finalists for the Echo Sports Awards were announced and we have finalists in 4 of the
categories!
Last year we won the Young Club of the Year Award, this year we have been nominated for the Senior
Club of the Year and join the Cheltenham and County Harriers and the Gloucester City Winget Cricket Club in the final.
Steph Gill has been shortlisted for the Coach of the Year Award and joins the Gloucester City Manager Dave Mehew,
Debbie Casling from Golf and Gloucester Athletics Club’s Lorraine Shaw.
Lucy
Mason is shortlisted for the Gloucestershire Young Sports Personality of the Year and joins amongst others another archer,
Kieran Slater from Bowmen of Minchinhapton in the final!
The other finalist is Roger Crang
in the Outstanding Services to Sport Category and just to be listed with the other 3 finalists is an honor in itself. Peter
Ford from Gloucester Rugby, Chris Germain, Cricket and Lionel Hurst Gloucestershire Warriors.
The awards ceremony will be in the Gold Cup Suite at Cheltenham Race Course
on 23rd November.
These nominations reflect the strength in depth that the club has developed bringing
success on and off the field and is a reflection of the involvement and contribution that all our members make not just to
the club but to the community and to the sport. Not bad for an amateur club with no facilities of its own!

Archery
GB National Ontarget Awards
The weekend of the 22/23 October was the Archery GB Development Conference and on the Saturday
evening they announced the winners of 6 Ontarget Awards.
Ontarget is Archery GB's new exciting and innovative national club development
programme which has significantly contributed to the sport’s 12% growth in participation in just 12 months!.Archery GB recognises the commitment and vital
role that clubs play in growing the sport and a strong and healthy network of clubs is essential if archery is to grow.
The club won the
‘Innovation in archery’ category which is awarded to a club that has devised new ways to encourage
current members to further engage in archery and/or devised new ways that have attracted new people to the sport. Amongst our
many initiatives, is our daily work in schools, recruitment of females into the sport and design and implementation
of numerous coach and archery development programmes across the County.
Roger received the ‘Clubperson of the Year’ award which is awarded
to the member who has made the most significant contribution to a club and the sport over the past 12 months. Roger was quick
to point out that this recognition could have only been achieved by being a member of such a great club and that whilst it
is inevitable that individuals may be highlighted on some occasions, without the team there would be no success.
More information can be found on the Archery GB Website.
Cleve Archers win Sport England Award Our
congratulations go to Cleve Archers who have just been awarded a grant of seven and a half thousand pounds
to help with coach development and running after-schools clubs. Bob Nichols has put a lot of effort in to applying for this
grant which should allow Cleve to develop an after-schools programme similar to ours.
End of Summer Season Handicap and Classifications
The acting Records Officer has pulled together all the seasons scores and a final list has been drawn up. Those
achieving higher level classifications this year will receive their badges at the Club Annual Awards evening (At club's
expense!). This information will also be used to decide the highest junior and senior handicap improvement Archery GB Medal
awards (last year won by James Howse & Jo Chamberlain). A summary of the handicaps will be sent to the County Records
Officer and will be used to determine County Rankings. This year we had 7 Junior Master Bowmen, great effort!
Club Monthly League
The indoor monthly
league has started and all matches that take place at any of the club venues during October will count. This year as numbers
have increased only matches between similar bow types will count and the matches are decided on the best of 5 ends. All match
results to be recorded on the back of the club attendance sheets at each meeting.
Club
Motto As part of our LTAD programme we were advised to agree a club motto. Thank you to all those that
made suggestions and there were lots of them.
At the committee meeting the following motto was endorsed: ‘
Positive Attitude Leads to Positive Performance.’
Our mission continues to be: ‘ To fully support all members to achieve their full potential and to apply
the same principles to all those participating in our sport.’
Winter Practice Sessions
We have agreed
a new venue with Hatherley & Reddings Cricket Club for Thursday Evenings 7 - 9pm. This now means that the club meets in
at least one venue on all 7 days of the week and when you factor in our after-school clubs, more often than not we meet in
2 or more venues on the same day!

to agree a range of clothing products with Deer Park Logo etc. The prices are excellent, the specifications
well above our current supplier and very importantly the sizing of garments will be far more consistent.
In the next couple of weeks Academy Sports will have a Deer Park Page on line, where members can order products direct. Equipment Agreed to order 3 more straw bosses to ensure high poundage bows can be accommodated at the indoor venues without
foam bosses. Agreed to purchase an arrow cutter
for club member’s use. This has been possible thanks to the fund raising efforts at the sponsored swim and Swindon Greyhounds
evening. The same funding was used to purchase the bow press! Agreed to purchase an arrow spine measuring jig. Make and model to be decided and will be particularly useful to
those making their own longbow arrows.

Austin presented with Outstanding Sportsmanship Award
Austin Whitmarsh has been presented with the Club Sportsmanship Award at the Balcarras Saturday practice
session. This followed his action at the recent County Junior Championships and is well deserved, this discretionary Club
award should be much valued by any member receiving it! Well done to Austin.
Deer Park get a bonus win at Swindon Greyhounds
An excellent fundraising evening at the Greyhounds ended with yet another trophy for the club! Thanks to the support
of Swindon Greyhounds the cash value of all the tickets sold by the club were donated to the club and is going to be used
to buy an arrow cutter. We had a great social evening, raised lots of money but had a very nice surprise, there were 6 clubs
raising funds, each was given a trap for the night and points awarded for each dogs finishing postion and guess what? Yes
we led throughout the evening and lifted a very nice trophy at the end of the evening, receiving the award on the track at
the finishing post. Another example of our winning mentality!

Gloucestershire Junior Championships
September 10th 2011 – What a Team!
Who said archery was an individual sport?
This was an amazing day made possible by a set of dedicated teams that combined to celebrate the growing success of
junior archers in Gloucestershire!
In no particular order they all deserve a mention, Ken Martin’s team of 5 judges, supportive, efficient
and friendly, assembled to recognize Ken’s final official role before retirement.
|
|
| Judges and Officials Team! |
The field crew, hosted by Cheltenham
Archers and led by Gordon Day, again great standards, hard working and very supportive.
The refreshment team from Deer Park Archers led by Lynn and Janet
but supported by so many others who had donated a great range of cakes and drinks.
|
|
| Lynn, just one of our Refreshments Team. |
The competition team from Deer Park
led by Kate and Sally, efficient with the preparation and results but creative and precise with the Head to Head competition.
The raffle team,
not just those that sold the tickets, but so many who had donated numerous prizes in the first place and
an activity that is so vital to balancing the books.
The team of parents and volunteers that helped with the scoring and got the maths almost perfect!
The competition planning team that added
all those little extras to make this a special event, from running the event as a National to encourage first time archers,
adding the Cotswold Head to Head to make the event unique, the boxes of chocolates on the line, prize money for many of the
winners, having a parents section as part of the parent and child competition always prepared to try something new!
|
|
| Steve & James - Parent & Child Winners! |
And of course there was the archers,
good sized teams from Cleve, Cheltenham and Deer Park but also representatives from some of the smaller clubs, Fast &
Loose and Bowman of the Deans combined to create a fun, friendly atmosphere but still very much competitive!
Because the day was a great celebration of
junior archery in the county, the performance of our archers almost seems overshadowed but it certainly warrants coverage
and the preparation of the team for these championships should not be understated, for example 46 turned up for final practice
on the Thursday in less than perfect weather and much coach supported practice preceded that.
There were 30 County Titles and Awards to
be competed for and with Deer Park winning 26 of those, it was indeed a good day. With such a long list of achievements, perhaps
a summary of just a few of the special ones, that illustrates a number of emerging junior archers in the club.
|
|
| Deer Park Winning Club Team |
But first, on a very windy day
Arron Pearce, under 18 Gents Longbow, managed to smash the existing National Record by over 90 points, Robbie Baker, fresh
from his success at the Inter-Counties last weekend won a very competitive Boy’s under 14 section,
and in an equally competitive girls under 16 section Liza Hadley beat several members of the county junior team to win her
first county title. Riley Spencer-Nice, age just 7, shooting barebow lifted the county under 9 title in
his first competitive competition. Will Kurtz and James Lawton, Boys under 16 compound, shot well in the qualification round
but Will had an amazing run in the Head to Head competition just losing in the final.
There was the usual great performances from our established
recurve, compound and longbow juniors but it seems, on a day when archery in Gloucestershire took another positive step that
it was fitting to highlight some of the emerging talent.
On a personal note, I want to congratulate all those that took part on the day and cannot overstate
the buzz I get from being part of Gloucestershire Archery Society and of course, a great club like Deer Park Archers!

Clout Championships Report - September 11th 2011

Gloucestershire County Clout Championships
– Report
We are pleased to report that the first County Clout Championships for more than 10 years took place at KLB School
on Sunday 11th September. The venue was secured as a direct result of Deer Park Archers /Xperience Archery running
lunch time archery sessions over the past 12 months and starting another after-school club this month. Mavis Reynolds, organized
the event which despite a very challenging wind saw some excellent performances and claims for Tassle Awards and County Records!
Mavis had also kindly run a ‘Clout Training Session’ at Balcarras School in August. It was slightly unfortunate
that Deer Park representation was not greater but it fell the day after the County Junior Championships which also had many
of our parents shooting in the ‘Parent and Child’ Competition and that turned out to be quite a long day.
All those that did attend had a great day and none more so than Lisa Hadley our Girl under 16 recurve who on the
Saturday had won the County title in what turned out to be the most competitive group and she followed that up with the County
Clout Title and 2 County Records and a Black Tassel Award as a bonus! Her score or 134 on a double clout at 100yds in her
first competition was excellent.
Ian secured 3rd place in the Gents Clout (180 yds) and was just 6 points
away from the existing County Record of 10. Janet secured 2nd in the Ladies Clout. Arron Pearce who had broken
the National Record on Saturday won the boys under 18 Title. Roger won the Gents section of the Ladies round with a respectable
score of 37 and had to opt for that non championship round as he could not get the 180 yds against that wind.
This really
is an event we should look to support next year and Mavis Reynolds would be only to pleased to help with training sessions.
Well done to everyone on the day.
A record attendance!
A cold, windy, cloudy, dark
September evening just 2 days before the County Junior Championships brought a remarkable 46 club archers out to practice
and get ready for the competition! And there was some great shooting particuarly from the adults who will be shooting in the
fun Adult National at the junior event!
click here to play video of practice session
A First at Westminster!
The growth of our sport was further demonstrated when
2 days after the Junior Inter-Counties we supported a team running the first archery event held in the Houses of
Parliament! It took place on Speakers Green with a reception after the event in the Speakers Study and Crimson
Drawing Room. Hue Irranca-Davies Parliamentary Fellow for Archery hosted the event that saw Peers and MP’s get
a chance to show their skills.
The event organised by David Reader and his Development Team was another example
of how Archery GB are trying to promote the sport.
James
Howse, one of the Deer Park Juniors and 4 times National Champion was given the day off school to attend
and in addition to a tour of the facilities got to meet a host of MPs and Peers to promote the sport. Competitors included
the Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt and former Cabinet Minister Hillary Benn who all queued up to ‘have a go’ on
Speakers Green. Later at the reception James spent time with the Speaker of the House of Commons Mr John Bercow to tell him
about his involvement in the sport.
This was certainly a special day for all those involved.

Great Win for Gloucestershire in the Junior Inter-Counties!
(3rd Sept)
It has been a long wait for Gloucestershire to win the Inter-Counties title but the margin
of victory made it worth the wait! However, congratulations should firstly go to Paul Maines and his team for organising a
great day, venue, food, hospitality and organisation all scored 10/10. Secondly to all the teams and their supporters
for a great celebration of Junior Archery in the County, there is absolutely no doubt that the standards achieved were excellent
and the approach of all the teams was a credit to our sport.
The Margaret Lewis Trophy match result was as follows;
Gloucestershire 69 points Somerset 48 points Dorset & Wiltshire 48 points Devon & Cornwall
37 points
The scores were tied at lunch time with Gloucestershire and Dorsett & Wiltshire both on 10 points
but 4 wins out of 5 in the first afternoon session saw Gloucestershire open up a gap. The 12 individual matches in the second
afternoon session saw Gloucestershire win 8 of the 12 matches and completed a clean sweep in the Compound matches with all
3 archers scoring perfect scores.
With 10 of the 15 team members being Deer Park Archers we should be very proud
of their achievements, especially as 4 of them got personal bests. We had National Junior Squad members Kieran Slater
and Ashe Morgan in the team as well as Emily Bryant from Cheltenham Archers, who shot very well and 2 members from Cleve Archers
with Ellis Brine making a brilliant recovery after a difficult start.
The discipline trophies were won by
Gloucestershire for the Recurve and Compound, with Dorset and Wiltshire winning the Longbow and Barebow titles.
Well
done to everyone

Our congratulations go to Steph and Dan who got married on Saturday. It was a great day
attended by a number of members from the club. James ‘Awesome’ Howse gave an excellent speech! The happy couple of
asked me to record their thanks for all the gifts, cards and best wishes they have received, they will now be on honeymoon
for the next 2 weeks so extra support of other club coaches at club practice sessions would be great.

Club to launch new Junior Coaching Assistant Programme
Following the continued success of the Teacher and Parent Coaching Assistants initiative and the excellent
support some of our experienced junior archers have provided at this summers fetes, have-a-goes and on club practice evenings
we have decided to 'formalise' the role. We are getting some High Viz bibs made up with the words 'Junior Coaching
Assistant' embroidered on them, provide the right training and supported practice and hopefully this will lead to a number
of juniors taking the Level 1 Coaching Course in the future!
Big membership, improving standards and lots of venues means
bigger investment in equipment!
At the club committee meeting on the 29th July, John Craigie, one of our
equipment Officers summarised the level of investment in equipment the club has made this year. It reflects the number of
practice sessions we hold, the number of after-school clubs we support the number of beginners courses we run and the members
services we support.
This years investment to date can be summarised as follows;
33 foam and 3 straw
bosses
22 bows, including compound, recurve and longbows.
6 dozen arrows, backstop netting and 36 bracers.
£300 of books for the club library
£1500 on new 3D targets
£1600 on miscellaneous
equipment (including release aids, tuning equipment, string making materials, sights, launchers, arrow rests, vanes et)
We have also purchased a bow press and engraving machine!
Hillview Primary School win Summer Inter-School

First time winners of the trophy and a well deserved team victory. 11 Schools competed and over

All Female Beginners Courses
- Starting September 2011
Following publicity for these programmes we had over 50 applications from age 6
– 65. By Wednesday 20th July, 4 have-a-go talent identification sessions will have been run and there will be at least 4
all female beginners courses starting at Birdlip in September!
Update; Great sessions, lots of potential on display.
We will be offering a number of free places on these beginners courses and to support the Sport England initiative to get
more females into archery, the rest of the places will be offered at just 24 pounds for the 7 week programme! Initial
feedback suggests that we will need to run 4 all female beginners courses to meet demand.
Club Library Opens!
The new Club
Library is now open for business, members should contact Rosemarie to arrange loans, the book and DVD service is free.
Click here to see some of the books and DVD's available.
Another National Record for Lucy - 17th July
Lucy continues to re-write the National Records adding the Metric 5 to her list with an excellent display at the
Cheltenham Archers FITA. This was achieved despite very gusty winds and heavy rain! A big thank you to Cheltenham for another
well run tournament.
Regional Inter-Counties Championships
Another
great day at a championship event, with 10 of our 12 entries winning titles and the remaining 2 winning silver! So well done
to our Regional Champions, Alex Fraser, Aaron Pearce, Tom Howse, Callum Fraser, Beckie Hutchings, James Howse, Austin Whitmarsh,
Lucy Mason, Victoria Fraser and Sammy Howse. As another bonus we also won the overall team trophy with a score of 3,067 with another Gloucestershire

Great Performance at the National Junior Championships! We are pleased to announce that our team of junior archers were the
highest performing club at this years National Junior Archery Championships held at Lilleshall the National Sports Center. The team of 10 juniors finished
with an array of titles, medals and trophies but most importantly 2 of our juniors secured a place in the archery history
records. On the
Saturday James Howse became the first British junior of any age or category to break the 1400 points barrier with a fantastic
score of 1406 to win the Junior Gentleman’s Compound competition, in doing this he also secured 2
National Records. The following day he secured his 4th National title, again with another National record on a
Bristol 4 round.
Not
to be outdone Lucy Mason became the first British Junior to record a perfect Bristol round at any age and distance, shooting
144 golds from 144 arrows in the Compound under 12 round and secured her first National Title.
The 3rd National Championship Title was
secured by Victoria Fraser shooting Junior Ladies under 12 title and also shooting 2 National records on the Saturday.
3 members
won silver medals with Katherine Frusher, Beckie Hutchings and Callum Fraser all recording great scores in perfect conditions.
James Lawton won bronze in his first competition at this level.
There were also personal best scores for Alex Fraser who
was in a very difficult group and for Will Kurtz. Tom Howse finished 6th in a strong field of 40 archers.
Congratulations also go to Ashe Morgan from Cheltenham Archers won silver and Kieran
Slater from Minchinhampton bronze, in a very difficult category, they were the only other archers from the county to win medals. Gloucestershire also won the best compound team trophy (James, Lucy and Beckie) with all the archers
representing Deer Park and the GWAS Region finished second with this team.

County
Record for John!
On the same day as the National Junior Championships John Craigie broke a long standing County Record when
recording a very respectable score of 488 on the Longbow Hereford round, however he also topped that when he recorded a 3
Gold end (equivalent of a six gold end for recurves) at 80yds, the first longbow archer in the club to do this! Well done
John.
Kingham School Fete
7 of us were at the
Kingham School (Top private school) doing have a go archery all day , 5 teacher members , who will be doing the L1 course
in Nov and will be running their after-school clubs. It was the most upmarket event we have ever attended, sponsored by Bentley
Cars and Laurent-Perrier Champagne! All the money we collected (£160) will go to supporting
Teacher Coach development Fees. It was an excellently run event and we had a chance to promote archery to many different nationalities,
hard work but very rewarding. We will be supporting 3 other fetes during the summer all proceeds from those will be going
to their respective charities.
Beckie
Earns 'Gold' Progress Award
Beckie, who is shooting very well at the moment backed up an excellent
performance in mid week at Dunster by achieving a Gold Progress award on her first attempt. Head Junior Coach Dan Gill who
also runs the Progress Award Programme was delighted that Beckie had achieved Gold, she is the first Junior in the Club to
do so and this should inspire other juniors to try to improve on their Red Award but the standards for achieving Gold are
really testing. Well done to Beckie.
Short video of club activities
We have
added a short video extract from the filming that took place for our Club of the Year Award. It can be found on the 'What
the Papers Say' page.
Make it 6 National records in 4 weeks!
10 year old Lucy Mason added another National Record to her list of achievements
when recording 958 on a Short Junior Windsor at the Cleve Archers junior event.
5 National Records in 3 weeks!!!
Lucy Mason (Compound) became our 4th junior member breaking a 5th National record in less
than a month. Lucy shot 142 golds and 2 reds on a Bristol 5 (Minchinhampton)and she still has another 2 years at that distance! James Howse (Compound) shot a perfect round at Cheltenham Archers, Victoria has broken 2 Longbow records and Katherine a
barebow record. We are confident that with reasonable weather conditions that there will be a lot more National records to
follow.
Female Only Beginners Courses!
As part of our initiative to increase female membership we advertised in local papers and newsletters the opportuntity
to participate in a free 'have-a-go' session with an outcome of electing to do a full beginners course. All those
that demonstate potential will be able to do the 6 week beginners course for free! We have had an excellent response with

National
Sports Club of the Year Award
On Tuesday night, we won the coveted Sports Club of the Year Award at the Sport
and Recreation Alliance’s national awards ceremony. Awarded by the Alliance to sports clubs which
have made an outstanding contribution to their community, our representatives received a trophy and a £5,000
cheque from cricketing legend and Strictly Come Dancing star Mark Ramprakash.Tim Lamb, chief executive of the
Alliance said:“The Sports Club of the Year Award is something that we have hosted for many years to congratulate
and celebrate our community sports clubs. The nominees and winners just keep getting better and better,
and it is inspiring to see, in these straitened economic times, clubs run by volunteers going from strength to strength. We
hear a lot about the Big Society, you need to look no further that Deer Park Archers to see the very definition of it.
“As Archery GB put it, if there was a club on which to base the perfect club
template on, then Deer Park Archers is that club. What really stands out about the club is the fact that
it is driving the county and associated clubs forward. It could rest on its laurels but instead it is sharing its experiences
and promoting best practice to enable other clubs to progress.”
This recognition is as a result of a great
team effort with our partners, Active Gloucestershire, Girlguiding Gloucestershire, Archery GB, Wales Archery. Gloucestershire
Schools, Gloucestershire Archery Society, the Green Dragon and our own members and volunteers!
The night
was made even more special as we were joined by Lynne Evans MBE & GWAS Chairman, Archery GB Chief Executive David Sherratt
and Archery GB Chairman Dave Harrison, we thank them for their support.

This is great
recognition not just for Deer Park Archers but for our key partners and our thanks must go to Active Gloucestershire, Girlguiding
Gloucestershire, the Development Team at Archery GB and the many schools we work with.
Promoting Archery in the Community!
We
are developing a number of posters (with Archery GB's help as part of the ontarget programme) to promote our sport in
the local community and schools. Watch this space. One idea we have is to promote the 7 - 80+ age range. Shown in the photo
is Austin who is 7, Vanessa & Lynne (2 generations, ages available on request!) and Mr Rothnie 75 years young, who completed
a beginners course just last year! We have taken lots of exciting photos of junior archers for posters in local schools. We
will publish asap.
AGM & Quiz Night - 19th April
Well
done to all the competing teams. The winning team of John Craigie, Janet Hudson, Ed Paddy and Ian Pearce were narrow but worthy
winners. Excellent time, plenty of food, thankyou to all those that helped.
Active Gloucestershire A number of us went to this annual event at the University of Gloucestershire,
Chloe, one of our new compound archers and talented at a number of other sports was a guest speaker! There was a Sport Unlimited
DVD shown at the end of proceedings, again archery figured prominently and we will be getting a copy.
Swimarathon - March 2011 - Raising money for
Charity & the Club. What a fantastic
job our swimmers did. The Senior team finished 5th out of 45 teams and the juniors 38th. When looking
at money raised (£850), the seniors finished 4th highest and the juniors 14th, combined we were
the second highest club! The news
gets even better, the junior team comprising, James Howse, Lucy Mason, James Lawton, Rebecca Loveridge, Sammy Howse, Rebecca
May and Victoria Fraser have won ‘The Chairmans Award’ with a comment ‘Some very young swimmers putting
in a huge effort to complete their lengths’. They are to be invited to an awards ceremony in late May. Please note that all sponsorship must be in by
the end of April. Also thanks to Steph for organizing it and thanks to those who took a sponsorship form despite not swimming
and raised money, especially Will Kurtz.
The Club will use its share of the sponsorship money to purchase a Bow
Press as part of our 'Members Services', this will save many hours of travel and Bridge Toll costs to Wales Archery.
County Junior Squads
Congratulations
to our 8 juniors who have been selected for the 8 day Programme with Kath Fitzpatrick. (8/13). We also have 3 archers on Customised
Programmes and 5/10 juniors joining the 3 day Development Programme. Well done to everyone.

Archery GB Support In recognition of the work we do in the community and in schools
and our membership of 'ontarget', we have been offered support to produce some ‘professional’ posters
(A3+) to display in schools, youth clubs, community centres etc. These posters will also be available as a resource on the
Archery GB Website! Design and printing costs will be funded. We need to take photos of our top archers, get some basic info on each (Year born, school attended,
bow type, how long doing archery, achievements summary, perhaps a quote, etc). We will be approaching about 10 or so members to take part.
Engraving Machine
We now have our own
Engraving Machine! A big thank you to the Howse Family for their donation, especially Steve for successfully bidding on Ebay
and then travelling to Doncaster to collect it. We will be looking to train some members to use it. This will save many members
a considerable amount as the trophies flood in!
Bridle Path Clearance - 19th March Bubbs
Hill A big thank you to all members
that helped with this massive challenge. What a great job we did for Girlguiding Gloucestershire. We have had excellent
feedback from Cotswold DC & Highways.
County Junior Development Squad
Selection Event - Sunday 27th March
27 junior archers from across the county (16 from Deer Park) attended
a selection event, they had already submitted completed questionnaires, including their own coaches comments. Graham
Williams and Steph Crang formed the selection panel and were looking for at least 12 to join the 8 day course which will be
run by Kath Fitzpatrick. Archers were individually assessed which included analysis of video footage taken from 3 angles.
They also had the opportunity to complete a 3 dozen round to try to achieve Archery GB Progress Awards. This selection
event was focused on identifying at least 12 archers who have the potential to benefit most from the development programme,
those not included will be offered the chance to attend a 3 day programme run during the winter of 1011/12. Results
will be announced over the weekend of the 2/3rd of April.
Swimathon - Saturday 26th
March
A big thankyou to the 16 members who swam at the Round Table Charity Swim and to all those who sponsored
our swimmers!
As well as making a donation to charity, teams competing could use some of the money raised to spend
on their club. We spent more than £700 on a compound bow press, which will save many hours of travelling and Severn Bridge Tolls!
Last week we were able to secure some sponsorship to help towards the costs of purchasing our own engraving machine!
With many members doing well at competitions, engraving costs were starting to mount up.
We are arranging training
courses to ensure a number of members can operate botht he bow press and the engraving machine.
After-School Archery
The club supports more than
10 local schools to run archery sessions, click below to see recent results, session content, contacts etc.
Latest Schools Archery Newsletter
Club Target Day - Vegas
27 archers attended the
session on Sunday, many having a go at a Vegas round. As usual archers were not allowed to record their own scores etc. 4
records were broken, the best was that by Martin Hutchings, shooting a longbow score of 244, which was a handicap score 10
points lower than Martin has previously achieved!
Callum smashed the existing record by over 20 points, recording
a score for Gents U16 Compound of 552.
Lucy Mason also broke the u10, u12, u14 etc records for junior ladies compound
with 423.
Katherine Frusher shooting Barebow recorded a Pb by a massive ammount, recording409.
Well
done to all that took part, this is not an easy round.
Bridle Path Clearance
Thank you to all the members
that helped for 3 hours on Saturday morning. We achieved a lot and it looks fantastic!
Welcome to some new members! The Monday Beginners Courses have just completed,
welcome to all those that have now joined the club. Members, if you see a new face, please feel free to introduce yourself!
We are pleased that 95% of those that attended the 8 session programme have joined the Club. Prior to particpants starting
a course, we arrange a have-a-go to ensure that archery is for them. Week 8 is a workshop covering basic bow maitenance and
set up. Thank you to steph and dan for running the courses.
Bow Press
Sponsorship from our two teams
entering the Swimathon next week should hopefully meet our target of raising enough money to bu a bow press. This will save
a lot of money/time traveling to Wales Archery, all part of our members services!
Engraving Machine
Thank you for the donations,
also following some stirling work by Steve on ebay, we now have a machine. Once we work out how to collect it from Doncaster
we will get engraving!
Engraving Machine Many members are running up lots of engraving costs (due to our
success!) and we have had a couple of potential offers of donations towards purchasing one for the club. If anyone else
may like to make a donation (or already has a machine) please let me know. This is a difficult situation as the savings and
value of investment is related to the number of trophies won, for some (me included) the number of future trophies may be
minimal. However the proposal if we had a machine, we would then charge a nominal amount for its use, therefore potentially
generate an income for the club. A final decision will be made at a club committee meeting so any offers of sponsorship/donations
could strengthen the case!
County Records At the County Meeting last Wednesday a list of new County records was circulated, there were 47 new records
of which our members claimed 41 of them! We have just applied for a further 21. This achievement recognises not
just the archers but the coaches and the club ethos of encouraging competition. During this period, many more archers entered
competitions, many got personal bests, others of us just enjoyed the opportunity to compete!
Bridle path date – Saturday Morning
19th March As discussed
before, the bridle path at Bubbs Hill needs widening/clearing to meet local Highways Regulations. As an archery club we currently
benefit from using Girlguiding Gloucestershire land to shoot. We need to recognize this by at least making ‘inkind’
payments for their hospitality. Will
members who are prepared to help from 9am till midday with clearing the bridle path please let Roger know asap. Could members
with chainsaws please let Roger know. Those who are volunteering to help should ensure that they have substantial gloves.
The main role will be to pull the branches etc to designated areas. We also need a few volunteers to make refreshments. Your help will be much appreciated.
Quiz and AGM-Tuesday 19th
April @ Shurdington Village Hall.
Notice is given that the Club AGM will take place on the above date. It will be combined with a quiz evening which will not be an amateur affair in
the way it will be presented. It will be suitable for all ages and will be a team competition. Further details
to follow.
Junior Reps Currently Rosie & Beckie are the club Junior Representatives
and they sit on the committee. Rosie will be going off to University so we need to identify at least one replacement, anyone
who would like to know more about the role and may consider taking up the post should talk to any of the management committee.
PESSYP grant We are waiting for confirmation on the amount we have been awarded
(part 2 of a 3 year award), this money will be used to support the after-schools programmes with the purchase of additional
equipment , including bosses and 4 Compound Bows, with release aids etc to support the further development of pupils currently
using Genesis bows who elect to progress to compound rather than recurve.
Ontarget grant We are pleased to announce that we have been successful in being
award a total of £1500 and this money will be used to support the 8 day Junior Squad Development programmes where
the money will be used for the hire of a Senior Coach, venues, equipment hire and training aids. We have also secured
funding from other sources to support this initiative, open to all clubs in the County as the total cost of the programme
will be in the region of £4500. Selection to be part of the programme will be done by an independant assessment panel.
CCPR Sports Club of the Year (All Sports Clubs)
We
have just been informed by Archery GB that we have progressed to the next stage and will be one of three Clubs representing
our Sport. We will not know the results of the next stage for at least a month, we are now in with the elite
clubs from all other sports from across the Country! We have made an excellent submission and should be proud of what
we have achieved in the last 12 months, and to be representing Archery GB is again something we should be proud of! Can
we win? Well, we have a chance, however reality is that despite us doing our best there be others that have done even better.
If there is, then that is great for sport!
Brixham Clipper Tournament 6th
February …….What a day! Full
report on the competitions page, to say it was a great day was an understatement! We have been supporting this excellent tournament
for many years and Brixham Archers always make us welcome. This year we took a big team, most put in great performances
both in the qualifying rounds and in the Head to Head Elimination Rounds. With the exception of the ladies recurve we had
archers in all the finals and we won most of them! Members also broke another 6 County Records. Steph was also invited to be the Lady Paramount, which
again was typical of the welcome offered by Brixham Archers. We will travel down again in May to support their next
competition.
Ontarget Funding – Archery GB We have submitted our funding application and have endorsements from, Archery
GB Coaching, Active Gloucestershire, Community Coaching Manager, Balcarras Partnership and Gloucestershire Archery Society.
This funding will be used to support an 8 day coaching programme, taking place over a 12 month period and run by Kath
Fitzpatrick, very successful Senior Coach and will target the Counties top 12 juniors. This will be the next best
thing to being part of the National Squad! Applications to join this £4.5K programme will be opened on confirmation
of the funding. Again watch this space.
Bring and Buy Wow, what an evening! This was our first attempt at holding such an event and it was a resounding
success. More than £1500 changed hands and most of the items sold were less than half the market price. From bows,
arrows, quivers, sights, club clothing to bow stands, complete archery kits and customized bracers all at fantastic prices.
We will do this again. Thank you to everyone that helped on the evening, especially to all those who helped with refreshments.
Thank you also to those that also donated kit to the Club.We
still have individuals looking for specific items that could not get to the event, so could members who still have significant
items such as bows, arrows, bags and sights please let me know the details of what you have and I will circulate the information
in the next newsletter.

excellent entry of 46 members and we had a great return of medals and trophies, achieveing 6 new County Records and another

the county if they were achieved during the county junior squad training day! Well done to Archery GB for running this
key stage related programme.
Junior Members Team Building and Integration Morning
at Balcarras – 12th December
24 juniors spent the morning taking part in a range of activities aimed at easing newer members into the club.
A selection of fun ‘ice breakers’ and team challenges took place throughout the morning as well as a chance

Deer Park Archers took 8 juniors to the National Indoor Championships at Stafford.
With more than than 800 archers competing
over the 2 day event all 8 performed well leaving the Club with the second best return of medals in the UK!
Victoria Fraser, just 10 and shooting longbow in her first National Championships won the Under 12's
and James House, just 10 became a TRIPLE British Compound Champion when easily winning the junior
gentleman under 12's. Recording another county record, James is now ranked 12th in the under 18's, a real achievement.
Lucy Mason (10) again shooting her first National Championships was just beaten into second place in the under 12's junior ladies compound but smashing the
county record by 60 points! Beckie Hutchings finished 3rd in her category being beaten by 2 of the Archery GB National Junior Squad who she had beaten at the
National outdoor championships earlier this year.
Perhaps the best performance of the day was by Tom Howse (14), shooting
in the under
16 recurve division, recording a personal best and securing a bronze medal in a highly competitive group. Rosie Benfield
finished 15th and Alex and Callum Fraser 11th and 6th respectively.
The event was attended by all the recent
Commonwealth Medal winners, who were very impressed with the performance of young Deer Park Archers and 2 of the Gold Medal
winners posed for photos with the club team.
Photos to be iploaded in next couple of days.
County Record for Lucy! Lucy
is just 10 and she broke the under 13 county record for compound Portsmouth. Thios will be her first of many, County, Regional
and National records! Well done!
A BIG thank you to Shell UK!
Dan
and Roger travelled to London to receive the bosses so kindly donated to the club by no less than Shell UK. A search
of clubs on the internet had identified Deer Park Archers as a club that played an active role with the community! We
collected 5 High Durability Foam Bosses (it took 2 of us to lift each one) which had built in 122cm faces and 8 Egertec Straw
Bosses and some stands.
We would like to record our thanks for such a donation.

2010 Gloucestershire County Junior Archery Championships Cheltenham Archers hosted the annual junior archery
championships on their excellent racecourse ground which saw 60 of the county’s top juniors competing for honors. Mrs Lynne Evans M.B.E. a member of the British Olympic Committee and Munich Olympian was the Lady Paramount for the day.
Gloucestershire is enjoying a surge in interest by juniors in the sport and this is being matched by success in competition
with a number of archers winning National titles, representing GB and breaking their fair share of British records! The results were dominated by just 2 of the 13 clubs in the county with Deer
Park Archers based between Cheltenham and Cirencester, winning 13 and Cheltenham Archers winning 4 of the
county titles. Amongst the highlights were wins for top recurve archer Ashe Morgan of Cheltenham, a member of the National
squad who continues to support his club and local events. James Howse, Compound Archer, who broke a British record last week
whilst shooting in the Inter-Counties Championships won his category. There were also successes for a number
of novice archers who have started in the sport during the last 12 months through beginners programmes started in local schools,
Rosie Andrews recorded an outstanding score, which was a new County record, in the Junior Ladies Barebow category, Rosie made
her debut last week for the County Team having been recruited from the Cirencester Kingshill after-school
club. Lucy Mason just 10 years old from Deer Park Archers won her Compound category and then took the Cotswold Head
to Head Title when competing against the top compound archers from all the other age groups. The Recurve H2H Cotswold title
was taken by Ashe Morgan with Rosie Andrews in second and Rosie Benfield in third. The top club award went to Deer Park
Archers with a team comprising Beckie Hutchings (who also recorded the top score of the day), Tom Howse and Rosie Benfield.
Further details can be seen on the competitions page.

LOCAL PAPER HEADLINES
National Archery Titles for
James and Beckie Cheltenham based Deer Park Archers sent 5 Juniors to this year’s National Championships at Lilleshall and once again had great success. 10 year old James Howse competing in the
Under 12 Compound category , is a pupil at Shurdington Primary School, followed up his Indoor National
Title won late last year, recording the highest score of any competitor in all categories, this was achieved in
appalling conditions with a strong gusty wind and yet his score was just 2 points off the National Record.
Steph Crang, his coach was full of praise for his achievement “James has worked extremely hard to earn this,
both mentally and physically. It is a product of team work with his parents and 2 brothers, who are
all good archers, supporting him. This, together with the support of all the club members makes it truly a team effort.” Beckie Hutchings, 14, and a pupil at Bournside School had strong competition
in her category but managed to record victory by just 2 points, finishing ahead of a GB squad archer. Again Beckie
has had the support from her family, her dad Martin is the Club Child Welfare Officer and an emerging
Longbow archer. Alex Fraser, a previous National Champion from Kingshill School finished 4th in his
category. In addition to the normal club practice sessions, all 3 of these juniors support their respective after
school clubs, helping pupils who are trying the sport for the first time. Deer Park Archers
are currently running archery programmes in 10 local schools and doing activity days at many others. As a result
of their efforts Gloucestershire has just been selected as a lead County by the National Governing Body
(Archery GB) and Sport England to introduce this Olympic Sport to many more schools. The club organizes
a County Schools Championships each term, Bourton-on-the-Water Primary School, are the current holders, recent winners have been Balcarras and Kingshill. Deer Park Archers are working with Archery GB to put a structure in
place that can provide coaching qualifications for interested teachers so that they can set up sustainable
archery clubs in their schools. These school clubs will then feed the senior clubs and universities with well trained
juniors. Deer Park Archers, with a membership of over 200, are committed to supporting both
recreational and performance archers but they do want to expand their elite squad and will shortly be commencing
a selection process to identify juniors with archery potential. Those selected will be offered a FREE
8 week beginners course working with excellent coaching staff, for further details anyone interested should visit
the website www.deerparkarchers.com. It is hoped that this initiative will add to their growing list of junior National Champions!
Arron grabs more longbow records Arron had a great week at Dunster breaking 9 County records
including Metric 1 distance records, Albion, Western and Bristol 1 records. He followed this up with a 2 way Western record
at coastal Archers. Arron has now broken more than 15 County Records, this year alone!
Social Evening – Club Jungle Rumble
Crazy Golf 20 of us had
a great evening in Bristol. Best scores were Martin
– 42, Val – 43, Roger – 44, Dan – 46, Ness – 47, John – 49, Ed – 50 Whilst the Golf was excellent the meal was less
so, with this standard of service and quality of food, Frankie and Bennies is clearly a place to avoid! Full results
and photos will be posted on the website.
Bourton on the Water Primary School

Bourton pipped Archway school by the narrowest of margins to take the Summer Term
Trophy competed for by 10 teams and 116 archers. Go to the Archery in Schools page for further information and for full

way of communicating and the website is getting a lot of hits on a daily basis, when I have the time we do have the tools
to analyse the usage, so will report on that at a later date.
Archery GB New Web Site is now working. Thanks to the work we do
in schools Gloucestershire has been selected to be a lead County for the National Schools Initiative. Members of Archery GB,
the Community Sports Partnership, representatives from other clubs and teachers will be meeting at Deer Park on the 21st.
As a lead County we will be able to attract additional support and funding to build on the work we are already
doing.

weather, although again if wet will leave the fita faces up on the field course as the 2D Animal faces are plain paper and
would fall apart.

Child
Welfare Officers In line with Club Standards
Regulations, which requires both genders to be represented, Martin Hutchings is confirmed in post and in addition to her current
role as Club Treasurer Lynn Benfield is appointed as Assistant Child Welfare Officer.
Thanks
and Congratulations At a reception hosted by
Lord and Lady Vestey the Chairman of Cotswold District Council Ben Jeffrey asked that their thanks be passed on to all club
members for the clubs support in working with juniors, especially with the work being carried out with local schools.
Archery GB Development Club The
newly appointed Archery GB Club Development Officer Aaron Coggan visited the club on Monday, we will be used as a model for
other clubs to aspire to! Archery GB will be appointing a Club Development Officer in each County, clubs identified as ‘Develop
Clubs’ will be eligible for additional funding to support coach and archer development, facility improvement etc. Records Officer Marnie
now has software to help with recording scores, calculating handicaps etc. Can we please insure that when we do competitions
we forward the results sheets to Marnie asap. It is helpful if all the results from a competition can be forwarded as that
may also include results of other club members.
Competitions Martin is continuing to develop the competitions folder and also to produce a
completion schedule which will also be published on the club website. We are also looking to encourage members who have entered
competitions to write their names on the schedule (Bubbs Hill Notice Board) so that others may be encouraged to also enter.
Club
Shooting Times All members should note the
following; ·
Archery GB Insurance is not valid if an archer shoots
on their own, if they are accompanied by another person who is not shooting then that is acceptable.·
As we are guests of Girlguiding Gloucestershire (and
therefore the area can be used for a host of other activities) archery members may ONLY use the facilities within the prescribed
times or if outside of those times with the prior approval of the Guider in Charge (Mary). Unauthorised use of the grounds
will be deemed a club disciplinary matter and appropriate action will be taken.
Carbon Arrows There seems to be some confusion on the use of
carbon arrows for outdoor shooting, pure carbon arrows are NOT acceptable, combinations of metals and carbons are fine, so
for example ACC’s and ACE’s are ok.
Club Equipment hire This statement does not affect members who use club equipment which is provided
on the night and not taken away. Following last weeks committee meeting notice is given that a charge of
£5 per month will be charged from 1st May for those that borrow a bow and arrows, those borrowing one or
other item will be charged £3 per month.
County team Selection Members should note that the criteria and processes for selection to both the
senior and Junior teams have changed, they can get more information by visiting the county website or talking to Steph.

audited accounts are available for inspection, copies of the accounts are available from Lynn Benfield. Thank you to Lynn

has been decided to postpone the event. We will announce an alternative asap. The AGM will also need to be rescheduled.

though). You will also be able to shoot on Saturday evening (let me know if you need to loan equipment)
and there will also be shooting from 10 -12noon on Sunday morning (own equipment only).

this morning) and that is on top of roads that have not improved over the last few days and were/still are only just passable
with 4 wheel drive. Unfortunately we cannot get the Transit or the trailer out of the car park so we cannot transport
the equipment to Kingshill. Hope to see you all for final practice on Saturday at Balcarras.

NEWS FLASH
!
We have been awarded £3,609 by Archery GB and Sport England to pursue our work with schools archery! Following the work we do in
schools and the Sport England drive to encourage more juniors into sport, as part of the Archery GB Sport Development Group
we were invited to submit an application for funding to help us make archery more sustainable in schools and the club, with
the objective of retaining more juniors in the sport. Roger submitted a 7 page proposal and the result
was that we were awarded the £3,609 to buy more equipment to allow us continue our Nationally recognized work in schools.
Having already secured funding to run programmes until the end of this academic year, we have also applied for significant
funding to support us running beginners courses and after-school clubs in the 2010/11 academic year. If you visit the
club website www.deerparkarchers.com and look on the schools archery page and the link displayed
on that page you will see some of the activities we are supporting. The long term benefits to the club are significant with
improved shooting venues, lower costs and a constant supply of new junior members. We are also applying for funding to train
teachers/parents in the schools we are working in to gain qualifications to enable them to support the after-school clubs
to ensure they are sustainable.

at Birdlip may still continue depending on demand.

A number of our members
attend/will be attending Kingshill School. We will be running an after school club on Tuesday evenings. 3:15 to 4:15 for beginners
and 4:15 to 5:15 for improvers. Talk to Roger for further information on how to enroll. One of the School teachers will be
joining Deer Park Archers to consolidate the link between the club and the school.
Balcarras School
A similar arrangement is
being made with Balcarras School and the after school club will meet at 3:30 on a Wednesday evening for 1 hour.
Training
Congratulations to Vanessa
who has been selected to attend a fully funded weekend course at Lilleshall with the theme of Disability Awareness and Best
Practice. Four coaches have been selected from each region. Coaches from the Archery GB Performance Unit and the Paralympic
Squad will be attending.
Andy, Steph, Dan and myself
will be attending an afternoon workshop (today) at the University of Gloucestershire on Positive Behaviour Mangement in Sports
Coaching. Again the attendance is funded as we take part in a number of schools
programmes.
Clothes Orders
Another order going in
this week, talk to Steph or email her at sjcrang@aol.com Anyone who has not collected/paid
for their kit previously ordered should note that they have until the end of the week to do so or it will go on general sale.
Bows for Sale
We will have sorted all
the equipment for sale by the end of this week, there are likely to be 7 adult bows and 5 junior bows for sale from £20 -
£45. We can also help with arrow purchase.
Birthday Parties/B-B-Q’s/Business Corporate events etc.
Steph and Dan have now
set up their own company www.xperiencearchery.co.uk so if members would like to book, talk
to them for a good rate as members of Deer Park Archers!
Arrow Wrap
As many of you will have
found, it is difficult to rely on vanes sticking to aluminium shafts, buying arrow wrap from archery shops is very expensive.
We have been experimenting with using ‘Fablon’and the initial results are excellent! The vanes stick really well,
the arrows have been soaked in water for 24 hours and then dried, left out overnight in damp grass etc. We will now fletch
a couple of dozen club arrows for further trials, if it works, the cost of fablon is around 100 times cheaper and there is
a good choice of colours!
Sustainable Archery
The latest members to benefit
from our Club policy of recycling bows/limbs etc are Michael, Louise Dan, Molly, James and Amy. Lets keep up the good work,
if you are not using something, upgrading etc then please let Dan know so we can find a buyer.
Thank you to Nick for donating
3 sets of Junior Aluminium Arrows to the club.
Cleve Archers Premier Event
Congratulation to Alex
who completed his second Premier 720 event and to Steph who won Bronze at the same event, defeating Andrea Gales ranked 33
in the world in the Bronze Medal match, she also beat Lucy O’Sullivan and Sheila Harris in earlier round, this was Steph’s
first victories over both archers. Her score was a Commonwealth Games Qualification score.
Club Practice Sessions
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday and Saturday evenings from 6:30 at Bubbs Hill. Remember with the exception of Beginners who have just completed the
Beginners courses all other members who borrow bows need to let me know that they are attending to ensure the appropriate
bow is brought along for them.
July 1st Newsletter
Alex & Callum Triumph at Regional Junior Championships
Saturday
27th June was a great day for Alex & Callum at the Regional Junior Championships, both not just winning but
recording outstanding scores!
Alex,
shooting a Bristol 2 (60yds) recorded 1280 with 136 Golds and 8 reds to break the existing County & Regional records held
our own Rob Gruar which was 1248 recorded in 2002.
Callum
recorded 1274 on a Bristol 3, with 133 golds and 11 reds, fantastic shooting and hopefully a good sign for this weekends National
Championships at Lilleshall.
Becky
shooting in the Bristol Jnr Ladies Recurve, finished second with a solid mid 900 score. Good luck to all of them for the Nationals.
Club Kit has been delivered!
All the
ordered club kit has been delivered, whilst the club has settled the bill it represents a large amount of money, so all those
that have ordered, should collect and pay for their clothing as soon as possible please.
Anyone
who has not ordered and now wants something should let Roger know by the end of the week as we are going to place another
order in the next few days.
Appropriate Footwear and Clothing
Following
a concern registered at the last committee meeting, would ALL members please note that for H&S reasons you are requested
to wear appropriate footwear (no sandals, open shoes, high heels etc), if you choose to ignore this advice you do so at your
own risk. You should also note that we have adders in the area and the recent hot weather has encouraged them to bask in the
cut grass areas, so please wear appropriate footwear! It is also advised that you tie back long hair and remove jewelry etc.
and that appropriate clothing is worn.
Steph gets another County Record and second Grand Master Score
At the
team event at Lilleshall last weekend, Steph recorded 339 for 3 dozen arrows at 70m to break her own County record and then
followed that up on the Sunday with her second Grand Master Score 1344 on a Ladies FITA.
County Junior Championships – Why not enter?
The entry
forms will be out this weekend for the County Junior Championships (which we
are organizing) which will take place on Saturday 12th September. We are hoping that most members in the club (both
senior and Junior) will enter this competition, which will take place on Cheltenham RaceCourse.
Coaching News- Congratulations to our successful Level 1 Coaches.
Karl,
Simon, Mark, Steph and Dan have all successfully completed their second and final Level 1 external assessments, so Dan and
Steph have completed the requirements and with Karl, Simon and Mark attending a Child Protection Course next week so will
they. Well done to all of them. Sharon will be externally assessed over the Summer break.
Vanessa has completed the 9 classroom days towards her Level 2 and awaits internal and external assessments. Steph
and Dan have been accepted onto a Level 2 Coaching Programme starting in September and run by East Midlands archery association.
3 week Club National Challenge Begins NOW!
ALL club
members are encouraged to record National scores on club practice sessions throughout July.
A National is a 6 dozen round, 4 dozen at the longer distance and 2 dozen at the shorter distance. Experienced adult
archers (and juniors that want to) shoot at 60yds and 50yds. In –experienced adults at 50yds and 40yds. Juniors shoot
50/40 or 30/20 or 20/15 depending on age. Record as many scores as you want during July and let Roger/Marnie(new club records
officer) have them.
This is
a great chance to establish an outdoor benchmark for yourself. National scores shot at formal competitions are also eligible
as are those shot earlier in the month.
Alex & Roger on Corinium Radio this week
A pre-recorded
interview with Alex and Roger on Archery will be broadcast on Corinium Radio Cirencester this Saturday between 5 and 6pm.
They broadcast on 87.7FM and it can also be heard on www.coriniumradio.co.uk
Club Committee reorganization
Following
a committee meeting, it has been agreed that Sharon will move to the position of Club Child Protection Officer and Lynne will
swop positions with Sharon and take up the post of Club Treasurer. We would like to take the opportunity to thank them for
their contribution in their current roles and wish them luck in their new ones!
Any members
who would like to join the committee should talk to Mary/Janet to register their interest.
Marnie
will be taking over the Club Records Officer from Andrea with immediate effect and again may we thank Andrea for all her efforts
and support over many years in this position. All scores should now be emailed etc to Marnie .
Archery in Schools
As you
will be aware we are currently completing 8 week courses in a number of schools including, Kingshill, Archway, Birdlip, Coberley
and shorter programmes in Balcarras, Sir William Romney, Whitminster Centre etc. We have made a small number of offers of
club memberships to pupils who have demonstrated the right attitude, enthusiasm and aptitude. We are now receiving requests
for Autumn and Winter programmes in many of these senior schools with a view to them setting up their own archery clubs. This
can only be an excellent development for the sport
Club Training Courses
Some of
us will be attending a course to allow us to teach GCSE Archery (PE Module) and to become external assessors for GCSE.
Four of the coaches will be attending a ‘Positive Behaviour Management in Sport’ workshop funded
by Active Gloucestershire for clubs that take part in the Sport Unlimited Programme.
As already mentioned some members will be attending the child Protection course in the next week.
We are organizing some more equipment maintenance courses and these will take place over the next couple of months.
Anyone else interested should let Roger /Andy know.
Beginners Courses
The four programmes currently running will complete next week. Indications are that the majority of participants
will join the club! We have decided that the Mondays and Wednesdays will then continue as open sessions, starting FROM 6:30
and continuing to 8:30. The coaches currently taking the beginners courses will provide the leadership for those evenings
which will become a single session, so everyone can attend at anytime during the evening and shoot for the full 2 hours if
they want to. New members can attend either/both sessions on the Mondays and Wednesdays. As the sessions are open, existing
club members can attend on those evenings and this will help with new members’ integration. Roger will continue to bring
the equipment on Monday and Wednesday evenings.
October Beginners Courses
We have decided to only run 2 programmes on a single evening at Birdlip, towards the end of October. The other

Members Field Course at BUBBS HILL – Thursday 11th June
We are
putting a mini-field course together at Bubbs Hill for this Thursday. We know a number of you would like to try field archery
but are worried about losing your arrows at High Cross. The course will be made up of 2D and 3D targets at markers suitable
for everyone and there will be cut grass/banks behind each target. Every thing else will be explained on the evening and groups
of 4/5 will make their way around from 6:00pm (last starting time will be 7:30). This
is a great chance to try field archery, so why not give it a go!
(Anyone
wanting to shoot as usual will still be able to).
Club Kit
Has been
ordered, will let you know as soon as we have a delivery date. The good news is that prices are the same or in some cases
lower than the last time we ordered!
Broken Bones
They say
things go in 3’s, well Victoria(arm), Phil (hand) and Tom (collar bone) have all had accidents in the last few weeks
(not at archery), so we hope they all get well soon.
Club Web Site
We are
making good progress, and it should be re-launched in next few days. The revised site will include links/information on competitions
and also links to archery shop web sites selling offering low cost equipment etc.
Club Instant Gazebo!
We tested
the clubs new instant gazebo, excellent once we got it up, however we will need a few more practice sessions if it is to become
‘instant’.
Introduction to Compound bow shooting – Coaching
Vanessa
and Mike Addis (Cheltenham Archers Coach) will start next Thursday. The club has purchased some excellent equipment to support
this activity.
Archery in Schools
We currently
have 6 programmes(72 participants) running in senior and junior schools, on completion of the 8 week programmes, unfortunately
we will only be able to offer membership to a small number of the participants.
Club Beginners Programmes
4 programmes
started last week, we limited the participants to less than 30, and we can accommodate all of these should they want to join.
Working with the Level 1 trainee coaches they all made excellent progress.
Club Equipment
Most members
have now bought their own equipment since completion of the last beginners courses, please note that whilst equipment will
still be available in a months time, priority will be given to those who complete the current beginners programmes and who
join the club.
Donations
Thank
you to Nick for donating 20 new ‘pigs tail’ metal fencing rods and to Lynn for the donation of a new light weight
gazebo. Also to Mavis Reynolds for donating some equipment for the field course (targets, signs, faces etc) and to Brian for
distance marker boards for bubbs Hill.
Old/outgrown
bows/arrows/quivers etc are always welcome for the club to use/members to loan, so if you have anything please do not hesitate
to donate it!
Wanted – Someone to make some more ground quivers.
We need
some more ground quivers, please ask Roger for current designs, the club will pay for materials if anyone has the skill/equipment
to make them.
Field Course – High Cross
Thanks
to Paul for laying out the 3D course last week, it was great fun.
Competitions
Good luck
to all our members that are shooting this weekend at Minchinhampton (a number in their first competition) and to Steph at
the UK Masters.
The Gloucestershire
County Junior Championships in September (we are organizing it) will in addition to offering a National Round (for adults
shooting 60/50 yds) will also offer a short National Round (for Adults) shooting 40/30 yds. This will give an end of season
chance for those that are not yet confident at 60/50 the chance to experience a competition shooting at 40/30 yds. We will
be circulating the entry forms next week.
