Working in the Community - Highlights

Possibly due to the roots of the club and our base being at Girlguiding Gloucestershire’s HQ and Activity Centre as a club we are extremely active in the community.
Whilst not the prime reason for this level of involvement the rewards have been numerous and in forms we did not anticipate!
The high levels of personal satisfaction were anticipated and we have not been disappointed, however the resultant increase in our club membership, cost effective access to school facilities, access to advice and support from our Community Sports Partnership, access to additional funding, training etc have been well beyond our expectations.

Community Action Badge Update

We now have 8 juniors on the programme and they are achieving their hours quite quickly! One of the aims of the programme is to encourage volunteering, especially as many organisations are concerned with the lack of volunteers available. With the long term aim in mind the committee decided to tier the award in a similar fashion to the Rose & Progress Awards. So after 10 hours the individual will be awarded a White badge, 20 hours a Black and so on. It was also agreed that the badges should be cloth rather than metal as many of the metal ones (particlarly the Progress Awards) do not last very long.

Community Action Badge

Deer Park Archers are proud to announce the launch of their Community Action Badge.
The club is looking to provide additional enrichment activities for its junior members aimed at personal and social development.

This programme, available to all junior members that meet the eligibility criteria,  supports the club’s vision for both club and individual member development and offers the following potential benefits;
  • Builds key skills in communication and the social skills necessary for success.
  • Helps young archers raise their awareness of both themselves and the world they live in.
  • Promotes equality.
  • Builds confidence and self esteem.
  • Helps archers to become more resilient.
  • Develops an understanding of those less fortunate than them.
  • Develops skills and motivation helpful to succeed in life.
  • Helps members to become more personally and socially responsible.
  • Helps to bring out their full potential.
  • Promotes our sport and the club in new areas of the community.
Benefits
In addition to the above Junior members completing a minimum of 10 hours service in support of  the programme  (in the Archery GB membership year), will receive a badge, entry onto our club role of honor list and 50% off their following years Club membership fee!

The individual programmes will be designed around archery related activities designed to impact on the lives of people in the local community. These can include supporting the delivery of after-school club sessions, delivery of have-a-go sessions to special needs groups, active inclusion,  supporting have-a-go village fete events, specific beginners course programmes, acting as a buddy for new members with specific needs and support of charity fundraising events. Where possible, involvement in a combination of activities is preferred.
All activities will be carried out under the guidance of a coach or suitably qualified committee member.

Some or all of the following eligibility criteria will be applicable depending on the project, if individuals do not currently meet relevant criteria then where possible support will be given to help them to meet them, or an alternative appropriate project identified.
·         Parent/guardian’s consent
·         Attained a level of maturity and reliability acceptable to the coaches they would be working with.
·         Attained a competent level of archery understanding to be able to communicate the basic technique to support have-a-goes, school clubs, beginners courses etc
·         A track record of adhering to all the range safety requirements.
·         Where identified successfully complete appropriate training.

This initiative has the full support of the Club Junior Committee and follows a number of pilot activities to establish the practicality of the proposal. The junior committee will organize a competition to design the cloth badge.

2011 Summer Fetes

We have supported 3 fetes during the summer, 2 of them we donated all proceeds to the local village/church and all the proceeds of the third fete were donated to our Levle 1 coach development fund!
These were all excellent opportunities to promote our sport and we generated a lot of interest in people applying to do beginners courses, not just in Deer Park Archers!

These sessions are an excellent chance to practice the skills to ensure participants have a good introduction to archery.

July 2011 Mass Girlguiding Participation Competition

We provided 6 coaches for a challenging evening when each coach was allocated 9 randomly selected guides and given 30 minutes to train them ready for a 'round robin' Head to Head Competition lasting just over 2 hours! The club provided all the equipment and organised the event, Steph's team won the event winning 4 out of their 5 matches. Medals were presented to all the individuals in the first 3 teams.

This is a great event not just for the girls but for the coaches.

Girlguiding Gloucestershire

We have an excellent relationship with the Girlguiding Centre at Deer Park. We not only provide the majority of activity instructors, pistols, mountain bikes, climbing, low ropes and of course archery in return for use of the shooting area but we do a lot more! As well as the obvious support with the archery, equipment etc we provide a lot of manual resources to clear and plant trees, erect fencing, dig ditches for the mountain bike course etc. Our next project is to clear and widen the bridle path and we will be providing the use of 4 chain saws and more than 20 members to clear the area. Two organisations working together for the good of the community!

One thing has become very clear, if we provide an opportunity for individuals to try our sport AND we coach them well from day one, keep them engaged throughout their participation, then it is something that appeals to many people regardless if they are considered sporty or not!

A summary of what we are doing in 2011

Well the answer will be similar to what we did in 2009 & 2010 only more sessions, more activities and bigger groups! We are in this for the long run so we will continue to develop our activities year on year, that may be volume but it will definately be quality.

In 2011 we are running more after-school clubs, for example during the Summer term we are supporting 11 school clubs, some at lunch time, others with 2 clubs running at different venues at the same time.
We are also supporting even more Active Inclusion events.

As a Club we are leading (and hosting) major Junior Squad Development Programmes for Junior archers from across the County, using funding that we have applied for and are happy to share.
As well as running the County Junior Outdoor Championships we are hoping to host the new County Junior Indoor Championships and the County Field Championships.
We are also running a Level 1 Coaching programme and continue to have members on County, Regional and National level Committees.
